   A 수빈 씨, 녹음 다시 틀어 볼게요. 김 사장님이 처음에 하신 말씀부터 한 마디씩 같이 풀어 봐요.

   Subin, I'll play the recording again. Let's go through what Mr. Kim said from the start, one bit at a time.

   B 죄송해요, 선배님. 솔직히 통화하는 내내 외국어를 듣는 기분이었어요. 억양이 너무 세서 숫자밖에 못 알아들었어요.

   I'm sorry. Honestly, the whole call felt like listening to a foreign language. His accent was so strong that I only caught the numbers.

   Okay, here's the first bit: "Miss, for that one, just load half, and put the rest on next week's ship." What did you hear there?

   B '고마'를 그만하라는 뜻으로 알아들었어요. 그래서 주문을 취소하시는 줄 알고 전산에 취소로 올렸죠.

   'Goma'reul geumanharaneun tteuseuro aradeureosseoyo. Geuraeseo jumuneul chwisohasineun jul algo jeonsane chwisoro ollyeotjyo.

   I took "goma" to mean "stop." So I thought he was cancelling the order and entered it in the system as a cancellation.

   A 아이고, 그래서 사장님이 아까 그렇게 화를 내셨군요. '고마'는 '그만'이라는 뜻도 있지만, 여기서는 '딴 거 말고 그냥'이라는 뜻이에요.

   Aigo, geuraeseo sajangnimi akka geureoke hwareul naesyeotgunyo. 'Goma'neun 'geuman'iraneun tteutdo itjiman, yeogiseoneun 'ttan geo malgo geunyang'iraneun tteusieyo.

   Oh dear, so that's why he was so angry earlier. "Goma" can mean "stop," but here it means "just, never mind anything else."

   Geureochyo. 'Damju'neun daeum ju, 'juiso'neun 'juseyo'yeyo. Geudaeum gujeol deureo bwayo. "Dandi hae juiso. Jeobeoncheoreom naljja teullimeun eoksuro gollanhamnidei."

   Exactly. "Damju" is next week, and "ju-iso" is "please." Listen to the next bit: "Do it properly, please. If you get the date wrong like last time, it's a real headache."

   B '단디'는 들어 본 것 같아요. '제대로', '꼼꼼하게' 그런 뜻 맞죠? 그런데 '억수로'는 비가 많이 온다는 얘기인가요?

   'Dandi'neun deureo bon geot gatayo. 'Jedaero', 'kkomkkomhage' geureon tteut matjyo? Geureonde 'eoksuro'neun biga mani ondaneun yaegiingayo?

   I think I've heard "dandi" before. It means "properly," "carefully," right? But "eoksuro" - is he talking about heavy rain?

   A 비가 억수같이 온다고 하잖아요. 부산에서는 그냥 '엄청', '아주'라는 뜻으로 써요. 날짜가 틀리면 아주 곤란하다는 거죠.

   Biga eoksugachi ondago hajanayo. Busaneseoneun geunyang 'eomcheong', 'aju'raneun tteuseuro sseoyo. Naljjaga teullimyeon aju gollanhadaneun geojyo.

   You know how rain can come down "eoksu," in buckets? In Busan it just means "really," "very." He's saying it'd be a real problem if the date's wrong.

    B 결국 제가 사장님 말씀을 완전히 거꾸로 알아들은 셈이네요. 마지막에 '알았능교?' 하실 때는 화내시는 줄 알고 식은땀이 났어요.

    Gyeolguk jega sajangnim malsseumeul wanjeonhi geokkuro aradeureun semineyo. Majimage 'aranneunggyo?' Hasil ttaeneun hwanaesineun jul algo sigeunttami nasseoyo.

    So I basically understood him the wrong way round. And when he said "allanneunggyo?" at the end, I thought he was angry and broke into a cold sweat.

    A 그건 '알았어요?'라는 뜻이에요. 부산 억양은 끝이 확 올라가서, 서울 사람 귀에는 싸우는 것처럼 들릴 때가 많아요.

    Geugeon 'arasseoyo?'raneun tteusieyo. Busan eogyangeun kkeuchi hwak ollagaseo, Seoul saram gwieneun ssauneun geotcheoreom deullil ttaega manayo.

    That just means "Got it?" The Busan accent rises sharply at the end, so to Seoul ears it often sounds like people are fighting.

    B 거래처 사장님께 어떻게 사과드려야 할지 모르겠어요. 괜히 저 때문에 배 일정까지 꼬였잖아요.

    I don't know how to apologise to him. Because of me, even the shipping schedule is in a mess.

    A 오해는 풀면 돼요. 김 사장님은 말투가 투박해도 뒤끝은 없는 분이에요. 대신 사과 전화는 수빈 씨가 직접 하는 게 좋겠어요.

    Ohaeneun pulmyeon dwaeyo. Gim sajangnimeun maltuga tubakaedo dwikkeuteun eomneun bunieyo. Daesin sagwa jeonhwaneun Subin ssiga jikjeop haneun ge jokesseoyo.

    Misunderstandings can be cleared up. Mr. Kim sounds rough, but he doesn't hold grudges. That said, I think you should make the apology call yourself.

    You only get an ear for dialect by listening again and again. Just say the first line his way. People from Busan love that.
