Day 10: Recording Geosigi in Gwangju

   Seonsaengnim, oraenmanieyo. Nogeumgi yeogi nwado doelkkayo? Geunyang pyeongsocheoreom pyeonhage malsseumhasimyeon dwaeyo.

   It's been so long! Is it okay if I put the recorder here? Just talk the way you always do.

   A 석사 논문 주제가 전라도 방언이라서요. 선생님만큼 사투리를 맛깔나게 쓰시는 분이 없어서 꼭 녹음하고 싶었어요.

   Seoksa nonmun jujega Jeollado bangeoniraseoyo. Seonsaengnimmankeum saturireul matkkallage sseusineun buni eopseoseo kkok nogeumhago sipeosseoyo.

   My master's thesis is on Jeolla dialect. Nobody speaks it as colourfully as you, so I really wanted to record you.

   Geuraje, uri ban aedeuri nae maltu hyungnae naemseo jinghage useotje. Geundi 'geosigi'man almeun baneun aradeunneun geosiyeo.

   That's right, my students used to laugh themselves silly imitating how I talk. But once you know "geosigi," you understand half of it.

   A 바로 그 '거시기'를 녹음하러 왔어요. 아, 그리고 이 녹음은 나중에 학회 자료집에 실리고 인터넷에도 공개될 거예요.

   Baro geu 'geosigi'reul nogeumhareo wasseoyo. A, geurigo i nogeumeun najunge hakhoe jaryojibe silligo inteonesedo gonggaedoel geoyeyo.

   That "geosigi" is exactly what I came to record. Oh, and the recording will go into a conference volume later and be put online too.

   Seonsaengnim, gapjagi wae geureoseyo. Pyojuneoro hasimyeon je nonmuni an dwaeyo. Banggeumcheoreomman hae juseyo.

   Why are you suddenly talking like that? If you use standard Korean, there's no thesis. Just talk like you were a minute ago.

   B 녹음은 좋다마는, 전국에 내 사투리가 나간다고 생각하니 민망해서 안 되겠어. 선생이라는 사람이 말을 저렇게 한다고 흉볼 거 아니야.

   Nogeumeun jotamaneun, jeonguge nae saturiga nagandago saenggakani minmanghaeseo an doegesseo. Seonsaengiraneun sarami mareul jeoreoke handago hyungbol geo aniya.

   Recording is fine, but the thought of my dialect going out to the whole country - it's too embarrassing. People will laugh and say, "Listen to how that teacher talks."

   A 흉보긴요. 요즘은 사투리가 오히려 정감 있다고 다들 좋아해요. 이름도 빼고 '광주, 오십 대 여성'으로만 나가요.

   Hyungboginyo. Yojeumeun saturiga ohiryeo jeonggam itdago dadeul joahaeyo. Ireumdo ppaego 'Gwangju, osip dae yeoseong'euroman nagayo.

   Laugh? Nowadays everyone loves dialect because it sounds warm and homely. And your name won't be on it - just "Gwangju, woman in her fifties."

    B 그래도 목소리는 나가잖아. 내 말투가 오죽 투박하냐. 우리 동네 사람들은 목소리만 들어도 누군지 다 안다.

    But my voice still goes out. You know how rough my way of talking is. People round here would know who it is from the voice alone.

    Then forget the recording for a bit and let's just chat. When you first went to Seoul, did you ever get into trouble because of how you talked?

    A towel, what else? Honestly, she held up a towel and went, "Is it this, maybe?" It was so funny.

    'Sanoramyeon eonjenganeun balgeun naldo ogetji' haneun norae Alje? Yeogeuseo hanpyeongsaeng salda bonoramyeon mari mome baeeo bureo. Pyojuneo hyungnaereul naedo geumbang twieonawaya.

    You know that song, "Live on, and one day brighter days will come"? Live here your whole life and the words sink right into you. Even when you try to put on standard Korean, they pop straight back out.

    Then can I keep recording? I'll leave your name out and disguise your voice so no one can recognise it.
