Day 109: Grandpa's Script for the Village Pageant

   A 임자, 이리 와서 좀 들어 봐. 마을 축제 역사극 각본을 다 썼어. 석 달 걸렸어.

   Dear, come over here and listen. I've finished the script for the village festival's history pageant. Took me three months.

   Seumuldu jang. Deureo bwa. Magi oreumyeon seonbiga apeuro nawaseo ireoke malhaji. 'Ttaeneun byeongjanyeon gyeourira. Hyungnyeoni deureo baekseongi gumjurini, igeosi eojji haneurui tteusiran maringa.'

   Twenty-two. Listen. The curtain rises, the scholar steps forward and says, 'The time was the winter of the Byeongja year. Famine struck and the people starved; how could this be the will of heaven?'

   B 스물두 장? 첫 대사부터 숨이 차네. 맨 앞에 앉은 애들은 벌써 솜사탕 사러 가겠어.

   Seumuldu jang? Cheot daesabuteo sumi chane. Maen ape anjeun aedeureun beolsseo somsatang sareo gagesseo.

   Twenty-two pages? I'm out of breath after the first line. The kids in the front row will be off buying candy floss already.

   A 이건 역사극이야. 애들 보라고 쓴 게 아니라고. 계속 들어 봐. '이에 김 선비가 곳간 문을 열어 쌀을 나누니, 이것이 우리 마을의 자랑이라.'

   Igeon yeoksageugiya. Aedeul borago sseun ge anirago. Gyesok deureo bwa. 'Ie gim seonbiga gotgan muneul yeoreo ssareul nanuni, igeosi uri maeurui jarangira.'

   It's a history play. I didn't write it for kids. Keep listening. 'Thereupon Scholar Kim opened his granary and shared out his rice, and this is the pride of our village.'

   B 영감, 솔직히 말해도 돼? 곳간 문 여는 데까지 몇 장이야?

   A 열한 장. 그 앞에 선비가 흉년의 원인을 설명하는 긴 독백이 있어. 거기가 제일 공들인 대목이야.

   Eleven. Before that there's a long monologue where the scholar explains the causes of the famine. That's the passage I worked hardest on.

   B 그러니까 말이야. 솔직히 지루하기 짝이 없어. 관객들이 선비보다 먼저 굶어 쓰러지겠어.

   Geureonikka mariya. Soljiki jiruhagi jjagi eopseo. Gwangaekdeuri seonbiboda meonjeo gulmeo sseureojigesseo.

   That's exactly it. Honestly, it's as dull as can be. The audience will collapse from hunger before the scholar does.

   A 지루하기 짝이 없다고? 석 달을 쓴 걸 가지고... 내가 너무 길게 썼나?

   Jiruhagi jjagi eopdago? Seok dareul sseun geol gajigo... naega neomu gilge sseonna?

   As dull as can be? Something I spent three months writing... Did I make it too long?

    B 길기도 하고, 다들 똑같이 말해. 선비도, 농부도, 아이도 전부 선비처럼 말하잖아. 누가 누군지 모르겠어.

    Gilgido hago, dadeul ttokgachi malhae. Seonbido, nongbudo, aido jeonbu seonbicheoreom malhajana. Nuga nugunji moreugesseo.

    It's long, and they all talk the same. The scholar, the farmer, the child, they all talk like scholars. You can't tell who's who.

    A 옛날 사람들이니까 옛날 말투를 써야지. 그럼 농부는 어떻게 말하나?

    Yennal saramdeurinikka yennal maltureul sseoyaji. Geureom nongbuneun eotteoke malhana?

    They're people from the old days, so they should talk the old way. So how does a farmer talk, then?

    B 농부는 배가 고프잖아. 배고픈 사람은 말이 짧아. '나리, 쌀 좀...' 이 한마디면 돼.

    Nongbuneun baega gopeujana. Baegopeun sarameun mari jjalba. 'Nari, ssal jom...' i hanmadimyeon dwae.

    The farmer's hungry. Hungry people don't make speeches. 'Sir, a little rice...' That one line is enough.

    A '나리, 쌀 좀...' 짧긴 한데 이상하게 마음이 찡하네. 그럼 선비 독백은 어떡하고?

    'Sir, a little rice...' It's short, but somehow it tugs at the heart. Then what do I do with the scholar's monologue?

    Don't explain the famine, show it. Put one empty rice jar on the stage and everyone gets it.

    One empty rice jar... that's good. Then instead of the scholar's monologue, let's open with a child sitting in front of an empty rice jar.

    B 그리고 하나 더. 곳간 열쇠는 원래 안주인이 갖고 있었잖아. 선비 부인이 먼저 문을 열자고 하면 어때?

    Geurigo hana deo. Gotgan yeolsoeneun wollae anjuini gatgo isseotjana. Seonbi buini meonjeo muneul yeoljago hamyeon eottae?

    And one more thing. In those days, the lady of the house kept the granary keys. What if the scholar's wife is the first to say they should open it?

    A 선비 부인? 대본에 부인은 한 줄도 없는데. 임자, 설마 그 역할 하고 싶은 거야?

    The scholar's wife? She doesn't have a single line in the script. Dear, don't tell me you want that part?

    Ha, I can see right through you. All right, let's write the wife's line. How about, 'My lord, will you not open the granary?'

    Too meek. 'Rice is not meant to rot in a granary. Here are the keys.' And she slaps them down, just like that.

    She slaps down the keys... Then the wife comes off better than my scholar. Is that all right?

    B 멋있는 게 뭐가 문제야. 관객들은 그런 장면을 기억해. 거창한 독백 말고.

    What's wrong with coming off well? That's the kind of scene an audience remembers. Not some grand monologue.

    All right, all right. Then at least let me keep my last line. 'This is the pride of our village.' I really want that in.

    B 그 대사는 좋아. 근데 선비 혼자 말고 온 마을 사람들이 함성처럼 같이 외치게 하자. 아이도, 농부도, 부인도.

    That line's good. But not the scholar alone; let's have the whole village shout it together like a cheer. The child, the farmer, the wife.

    A 온 마을이 같이... 그게 이 이야기의 진짜 뜻이네. 임자, 스물두 장이 몇 장으로 줄어들 것 같아?

    On maeuri gachi... geuge i iyagiui jinjja tteusine. Imja, seumuldu jangi myeot jangeuro jureodeul geot gata?

    The whole village together... that's the real meaning of this story. Dear, how many pages do you think twenty-two will shrink to?
