Day 106: Names in Red Ink

At a café, three friends, Sua (A), Taemin (B) and Julia (C), who is from Brazil, are writing birthday cards for their friend Seojin.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

C 어? 왜? 서진이가 빨간색 좋아하잖아.

Eo? Wae? Seojiniga ppalgansaek joahajana.

Huh? Why? Seojin loves red.
A 한국에서는 원래 이름을 빨간색으로 안 써. 옛날에 죽은 사람 이름을 그렇게 썼거든.

Hangugeseoneun wollae ireumeul ppalgansaegeuro an sseo. Yennare jugeun saram ireumeul geureoke sseotgeodeun.

In Korea we don't write names in red. In the old days, that's how they wrote the names of the dead.
C 진짜? 몰랐어. 아까 태민이가 쓰다가 갑자기 멈춘 것도 그래서야?

Jinjja? Mollasseo. Akka Taeminiga sseudaga gapjagi meomchun geotdo geuraeseoya?

Really? I had no idea. Is that why Taemin suddenly stopped in the middle of writing earlier?
B 응. 나도 빨간 펜으로 이름 썼다가 카드를 새로 샀어.

Eung. Nado ppalgan peneuro ireum sseotdaga kadeureul saero sasseo.

Yep. I wrote the name in red too, and then I had to buy a new card.
C 브라질에서는 그런 거 상관없어. 그냥 예쁜 색인데.

Beurajireseoneun geureon geo sanggwaneopseo. Geunyang yeppeun saeginde.

In Brazil nobody minds that. It's just a pretty colour.
A 요즘은 신경 안 쓰는 사람도 많은데, 싫어하는 사람도 있어.

Plenty of people don't care about it these days, but some people really don't like it.
C 알았어. 그럼 이름은 파란 펜으로 쓸게. 하트는 빨간색으로 그려도 되지?

Arasseo. Geureom ireumeun paran peneuro sseulge. Hateuneun ppalgansaegeuro geuryeodo doeji?

Got it. Then I'll write the name in blue. Hearts are okay in red, though, right?
B 하트는 괜찮아. 우리가 서진이를 좋아하는 만큼 크게 그려!

Hateuneun gwaenchana. Uriga seojinireul joahaneun mankeum keuge geuryeo!

Hearts are fine. Make them as big as our love for Seojin!
