Day 171: My Classmate From Vietnam

After school, Seojun (A), a primary-school boy, tells his grandmother (B) about a new classmate.

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

Did he? What's his name?
A 민이요. 우리 반에 외국에서 온 친구는 민이뿐이에요.

Miniyo. Uri bane oegugeseo on chinguneun Minippunieyo.

Minh. He's the only one in our class from another country.
B 혼자라서 외롭겠구나. 한국말은 잘하니?

Honjaraseo oeropgetguna. Hangungmareun jalhani?

He must feel lonely on his own. Does he speak Korean well?
A 조금 해요. 요즘 방과 후에 한국어를 배우는 중이에요.

Jogeum haeyo. Yojeum banggwa hue Hangugeoreul baeuneun jungieyo.

A little. He's learning Korean after school these days.
B 기특하구나. 우리 서준이가 옆에서 많이 도와줘야겠다.

Giteukaguna. Uri seojuniga yeopeseo mani dowajwoyagetda.

Good for him. You'll have to help him a lot, Seojun.
A 네. 근데 할머니, 민이네 집은 설날 음식이 우리랑 달라요. 떡국을 안 먹어요.

Ne. Geunde halmeoni, Minine jibeun seollal eumsigi urirang dallayo. Tteokgugeul an meogeoyo.

I will. But Grandma, Minh's family eats different food at New Year. They don't have tteokguk.
B 그럼 설날에 뭘 먹니?

Geureom seollare mwol meongni?

Then what do they eat at New Year?
A 잎으로 싼 네모난 떡을 먹어요. 안에 고기랑 콩이 들어 있어요.

Ipeuro ssan nemonan tteogeul meogeoyo. Ane gogirang kongi deureo isseoyo.

Square rice cakes wrapped in leaves. There's meat and beans inside.
B 나라마다 떡은 다 있구나. 참 신기하다.

Naramada tteogeun da itguna. Cham singihada.

So every country has its rice cakes. How interesting.
A 민이는 떡국을 한 번도 안 먹어 봤어요. 먹어 보고 싶다고 했어요.

Minineun tteokgugeul han beondo an meogeo bwasseoyo. Meogeo bogo sipdago haesseoyo.

Minh has never had tteokguk. He said he wants to try it.
B 그럼 이번 주말에 민이를 집에 데려오는 게 어떠니? 할머니가 떡국 끓여 줄게.

Geureom ibeon jumare Minireul jibe deryeooneun ge eotteoni? Halmeoniga tteokguk kkeuryeo julge.

Then why don't you bring Minh over this weekend? I'll make some tteokguk.
A 정말요? 할머니가 끓여 주시는 떡국이 제일 맛있잖아요!

Jeongmaryo? Halmeoniga kkeuryeo jusineun tteokgugi jeil masitjanayo!

Really? Your tteokguk is the best, Grandma!
