Day 74: Cutting the Winter Heating Bill

At the neighbourhood senior centre, two old friends, Youngsook (A) and Soonja (B), compare their winter heating bills.

B 말도 마. 이십만 원 넘게 나왔어. 영숙이 너는?

Don't get me started. Over two hundred thousand won. What about you, Youngsook?
A 난 팔만 원. 작년 겨울보다 반이나 줄었어.

Nan palman won. Jangnyeon gyeoulboda banina jureosseo.

Eighty thousand. That's half of what it was last winter.
B 팔만 원? 어떻게 한 거야? 너희 집도 우리 집만큼 춥잖아.

Palman won? Eotteoke han geoya? Neohui jipdo uri jimmankeum chupjana.

Eighty thousand? How did you manage that? Your place is just as cold as mine.
A 전기장판을 하나 샀어. 난방은 저녁에 잠깐 켜고, 밤에는 전기장판뿐이야.

Jeongijangpaneul hana sasseo. Nanbangeun jeonyeoge jamkkan kyeogo, bameneun jeongijangpanppuniya.

I bought an electric blanket. I only put the heating on for a bit in the evening, and at night it's just the blanket.
B 전기장판은 전기세 많이 나오잖아.

Jeongijangpaneun jeongise mani naojana.

But electric blankets run up the power bill.
A 생각보다 얼마 안 나와. 그리고 집에서도 내복 입고 두꺼운 양말 신어.

Saenggakboda eolma an nawa. Geurigo jibeseodo naebok ipgo dukkeoun yangmal sineo.

Less than you'd think. And I wear long johns and thick socks even at home.
B 나는 추운 건 못 참아. 작년에 너 난방비 아끼다가 감기 걸렸잖아.

I can't stand the cold. Last year you caught a cold trying to save on heating, remember?
A 그래서 올해는 이불도 두 개 덮어. 아직 감기 한 번도 안 걸렸어.

That's why this year I sleep under two quilts. I haven't caught a single cold yet.

Then maybe I should get one too. Where did you buy it?
A 시장 옆 전자 제품 가게. 이따 끝나고 같이 가 보자.
