Day 121: Opening a Café at Seventy

Youngsook (B) drops by the little café her old friend Soonja (A) has just opened in her neighbourhood.

How to study this lesson 4 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

  4. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  2. A 나도 몰랐어. 일흔에 모아 둔 돈 다 털어서 시작한 건데, 다들 미쳤다고 했지.

    Neither did I. I put all my savings into it at seventy, and everyone said I'd lost my mind.

    That's because you're doing it all yourself. Why don't you at least hire a part-timer?

  8. A 사람 쓰면 남는 게 없어. 그래서 말인데... 영숙아, 주말에만 좀 도와줄래?

    If I hire someone, there's nothing left over. So, about that... Youngsook, could you help me out just on weekends?

    Me? I don't even know how to make coffee.

  10. A 커피는 내가 할게. 너는 계산이랑 빵 포장만 해 줘. 너 은행에서 삼십 년 일했잖아.

    Keopineun naega halge. Neoneun gyesanirang ppang pojangman hae jwo. Neo eunhaengeseo samsip nyeon ilhaetjana.

    I'll do the coffee. You just handle the till and bag the bread. You worked at a bank for thirty years.

  11. B 계산이야 자신 있지. 근데 내 무릎이 작년만 같아도 바로 한다고 할 텐데.

    Money, that I can handle. But if my knees were like they were last year, I'd say yes right away.

  12. A 앉아서 하면 돼. 계산대에 푹신한 의자 하나 갖다 놓을게.

    You can do it sitting down. I'll put a comfy chair behind the counter.

  13. B 알았어, 해 볼게. 대신 월급은 빵으로 줘.

    All right, I'll give it a go. But pay me in bread.

  14. A 좋아! 빵은 얼마든지 가져가. 토요일 아침 여덟 시까지 와. 늦으면 빵 없다.

    Joa! Ppangeun eolmadeunji gajyeoga. Toyoil achim yeodeol sikkaji wa. Neujeumyeon ppang eopda.

    Deal! Take as much bread as you want. Be here by eight on Saturday morning. Late means no bread.
