Day 185 of 185

Day 185: Drafting the Delivery Apology Notice

At an online shopping company, customer-service manager Mr. Seo (A) and his staff Yuri (B) and Taeho (C) work on a public notice about delayed orders.

How to study this lesson 4 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
  3. Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
  4. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

  1. A λ‹€λ“€ 곡지문 μ΄ˆμ•ˆ λ΄€μ–΄μš”? 였늘 μ•ˆμ— μ˜¬λ €μ•Ό λΌμš”.

Dadeul gongjimun choan bwasseoyo? Oneul ane ollyeoya dwaeyo.

Have you all seen the draft notice? We have to post it today.

  2. B λ„€, 첫 λ¬Έμž₯은 "μ‹œμŠ€ν…œ 였λ₯˜λ‘œ μΈν•˜μ—¬ 배솑이 λŠ¦μ–΄μ‘ŒμŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€"둜 μ‹œμž‘ν–ˆμ–΄μš”.

Ne, cheot munjangeun "siseutem oryuro inhayeo baesongi neujeojyeotseumnida"ro sijakaesseoyo.

Yes, I started with the sentence "Due to a system error, deliveries have been delayed."

  3. C 근데 κ·Έ λ¬Έμž₯λ§ŒμœΌλ‘œλŠ” λ„ˆλ¬΄ 짧지 μ•Šμ•„μš”?

Geunde geu munjangmaneuroneun neomu jjalji anayo? Gogaekdeureun oryuro inhan jiyeonboda yeollagi eopseoseo deo hwaga natjanayo.

But isn't that sentence too short on its own? Customers were angrier about hearing nothing from us than about the delay from the error.

  4. A λ§žμ•„μš”. λͺ‡ 건이 λŠ¦μ–΄μ‘ŒλŠ”μ§€λ„ μ •ν™•ν•˜κ²Œ 써야 ν• κΉŒμš”?

Majayo. Myeot geoni neujeojyeonneunjido jeonghwakage sseoya halkkayo?

Right. Should we also write exactly how many orders were delayed?

Sutjareul sseumyeon iri deo keo boil tendeyo. Geunyang "ilbu jumun"irago hamyeon eottaeyo?

If we put a number, it'll make it look bigger. How about just saying "some orders"?

Ohiryeo sumgineun geotcheoreom boilgeoryo. Inteonese beolsseo 800geoni neomneundago da nawa isseoyo.

I bet that would just look like we're hiding something. It's already all over the internet that it's over eight hundred.

  7. A νƒœν˜Έ 씨 말이 λ§žμ•„μš”. μˆ«μžλŠ” μ •μ§ν•˜κ²Œ μ“°μ£ . "μ•½ 800건의 주문이 μ΅œλŒ€ 3μΌκΉŒμ§€ λŠ¦μ–΄μ‘ŒμŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€"λ‘œμš”.

Taeho ssi mari majayo. Sutjaneun jeongjikage sseujyo. "Yak 800geonui jumuni choedae 3ilkkaji neujeojyeotseumnida"royo.

Taeho's right. Let's be honest about the numbers. "About 800 orders were delayed by up to three days."

Geureom sagwaman haji malgo bosang naeyongdo neoeoya hal geot gatayo.

Then I think we shouldn't just apologise; we should include the compensation too.

Hoesaeseo baesongbireul hwanbulhago 3cheon won kuponeul jugiro haesseoyo.

The company decided to refund the delivery fee and give a three-thousand-won coupon.

  10. C κ·Έ λ‚΄μš©μ€ 맨 μœ„μ— λ„£λŠ” 게 μ’‹κ² μ–΄μš”. λκΉŒμ§€ μ•ˆ μ½λŠ” μ‚¬λžŒμ΄ λ§ŽμœΌλ‹ˆκΉŒμš”.

Geu naeyongeun maen wie neonneun ge jokesseoyo. Kkeutkkaji an ingneun sarami maneunikkayo.

It'd be better to put that at the very top. Lots of people don't read to the end.

Jigeum saenggakae boni munjega saenggin cheonnal baro gongjireul ollilgeol geuraesseoyo.

Thinking about it now, I wish we'd posted a notice on the very first day the problem started.

  12. A λ‚˜λ„ κ·Έ 생각 ν–ˆμ–΄μš”. 원인을 λ‹€ ν™•μΈν•˜κ³  μ˜¬λ¦¬λ €λ‹€κ°€ μ΄ν‹€μ΄λ‚˜ λŠ¦μ–΄μ‘Œμž–μ•„μš”.

Nado geu saenggak haesseoyo. Wonineul da hwaginhago olliryeodaga iteurina neujeojyeotjanayo.

I thought so too. We wanted to confirm the cause before posting, and it ended up two whole days late.

Daeumbuteoneun wonineul moreudeorado ildan "hwagin jungimnida"rago meonjeo allimyeon jokesseoyo.

From now on, even if we don't know the cause, it'd be good to let people know "We're looking into it" first.

  14. A μ’‹μ•„μš”, 그건 맀뉴얼에 λ„£μμ‹œλ‹€. λ§ˆμ§€λ§‰ λ¬Έμž₯은 μ–΄λ–»κ²Œ ν• κΉŒμš”?

Joayo, geugeon maenyueore neoeupsida. Majimak munjangeun eotteoke halkkayo?

Good, let's put that in the manual. What should the last sentence be?

  15. B "μ•žμœΌλ‘œ 같은 일이 생기지 μ•Šλ„λ‘ μ‹œμŠ€ν…œμ„ μ κ²€ν•˜κ² μŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€." μ–΄λ•Œμš”?

"Apeuro gateun iri saenggiji antorok siseutemeul jeomgeomhagetseumnida." Eottaeyo?

How about: "We will check our systems so this doesn't happen again"?

  16. A μ’‹λ„€μš”.

Jonneyo. Han beonman deo ilgeo bogo daseot sie ollipsida. Dul da sugo manasseoyo.

Nice. Let's read it once more and post it at five. You've both worked hard.
