Day 120: Fear of Flying Before Takeoff
On the airport train, Yuna (A), an office worker heading for her first business trip abroad, is sitting next to a woman (B) she has never met.
How to study this lesson 4 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
- Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Excuse me, are you all right? Your hands have been shaking for a while now.

A, ti nasseoyo? Joesonghaeyo. Sasil bihaenggi taneun ge neomu museowoseoyo.
Oh, is it that obvious? Sorry. The truth is, I'm terrified of flying.
-
B ์ด๋ ๊ฐ์๋๋ฐ์?

Where are you headed?

Singapore. It's my first business trip abroad, and I was so nervous last night that I didn't sleep a wink.
-
Bihaenggineun cheoeum ta boseyo?
Is this your first time flying?
-

I went to Jeju once as a kid, and that's it. They say I cried my eyes out when the plane shook. Ever since, even a picture of a plane makes my heart race.
-
Geureol su isseoyo. Sasil jeo seungmuwonieyo. Oneureun swineun narira chingu mannareo ganeun girigoyo.
That's understandable. Actually, I'm a flight attendant. It's my day off, and I'm on my way to meet a friend.
-

Really? Flight attendants aren't scared at all, right?

When I was new, I was scared every time it shook, too. But fear grows out of not knowing. Once you know why a plane shakes, it's much less scary.
-

Why does it shake?

Mostly because of the wind. It's like a car bumping along a rough road. Planes are built to withstand much stronger shaking than that.
-
Meorironeun algenneunde, momi mareul an deureoyo. Jigeumdo simjangi mak ttwieoyo.
My head gets it, but my body won't listen. My heart's pounding even now.
-
Geureol ttaen hoheupbuteo hae boseyo. Neseul semyeonseo koro deuriswigo, yeoseoseul semyeonseo ibeuro cheoncheonhi naeswineun geoyeyo.
When that happens, start with your breathing. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, then out slowly through your mouth for six.
-
Ireokeyo? Hana, dul, set, net... eo, jinjja jogeum naeun geot gatayo.
Like this? One, two, three, four... Oh, I actually feel a bit better.
-

You're doing great. During takeoff, fasten your seatbelt, listen to music, and keep tensing and relaxing your toes. When your body's busy, there's no room to worry.
-
Joeun bangbeobineyo. Geunde je chinguneun bihaenggi tagiga bappeuge wainbuteo masiraeyo.
That's a good trick. But my friend says to start on the wine the moment I board.
-
Haha, geugeon byeollo chucheon an haeyo. Ginaeneun geonjohaeseo sureul masimyeon momi deo himdeureoyo. Charari mureul jaju deuseyo.
Ha ha, I wouldn't recommend that. The air in the cabin is dry, so drinking alcohol makes it harder on your body. Drink water often instead.
-
Algesseoyo. Oneul bihaengman musahi beotyeo naemyeon daeum chuljangeun jom swiwojigetjyo?
Got it. If I can just get through today's flight, the next business trip will be easier, right?
-
Geureomyo. Geurigo heundeullil ttaeneun seungmuwon eolgureul boseyo. Jeohuiga useumyeonseo ilhago isseumyeon gwaenchaneun geoyeyo.
Of course. And when it gets bumpy, look at the flight attendants' faces. If we're smiling and working, everything's fine.
