Day 37 of 160

Day 37: Indexing My Allowance to Inflation

At home, Junwoo (A), a high-school student, asks his father Daesung (B) for a bigger allowance because convenience-store prices keep rising.

How to study this lesson 4 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
  3. Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
  4. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Prices? Listen to you, a high schooler talking about inflation. How much have they gone up?

Triangle kimbap at the convenience store was 1,200 won last year, and now it's 1,500. Cup noodles have all gone up too.

That's true. But how much do you spend at the convenience store a month? Let's look at your card statement together.

  5. A ์–ด... ๊ผญ ๋ด์•ผ ๋ผ?

You want a raise, don't you? Then you need evidence. Let's see... You're quite the spender. 120,000 won a month at the convenience store alone?

That's because I'm hungry after cram school. My friends wanted to grab ramyeon before going home, so I went along. Pretty much every day.

When I was in high school, my friends wanted to get tteokbokki every day after school, so I tagged along and blew my whole allowance. If you keep buying food like this, you won't last a month even if I double it.

  9. A ๊ทธ๋Ÿผ ์–ด๋–กํ•ด? ๊ตถ์œผ๋ผ๊ณ ?

If you drink that stuff every day, your health will run out before your allowance does. It's pure caffeine. Quit it.

Okay. A 10,000-won monthly raise to match prices. And half of it goes into a savings account, no matter what.

If you save steadily for three months, I'll match whatever you've saved. That's how you build up a nest egg.

Oh, so that's a hundred percent interest? Deal. From today, I'm taking snacks from home.
