Day 59: Recording a Haenyeo's Sea Songs

   The recorder's on, ma'am. Just sing it the way you used to at sea.

   From my mother. I learned it by ear, going out diving with her from the age of fifteen.

   A '이어도사나'는 무슨 뜻인가요? 가사 설명도 같이 기록해 두고 싶어서요.

   What does 'ieodosana' mean? I'd like to record an explanation of the lyrics as well.

   B 특별한 뜻보다는 노 젓는 장단을 맞추는 소리예요. 이어도는 옛날이야기에 나오는 섬이고요.

   Teukbyeolhan tteutbodaneun no jeonneun jangdaneul matchuneun soriyeyo. Ieodoneun yennalliyagie naoneun seomigoyo.

   It's less about meaning and more a call to keep the rowing in rhythm. Ieodo is an island from the old legends.

    Hardly anyone. The friends I dove with are all gone, and there are only a few young haenyeo. At this rate the song is going to disappear altogether.

    A 그래서 저희가 온 거예요. 해녀 노래도 소중한 문화유산인데, 전통이 끊기기 전에 할머니 목소리 그대로 후손들한테 남겨 두려고요.

    Geuraeseo jeohuiga on geoyeyo. Haenyeo noraedo sojunghan munhwayusaninde, jeontongi kkeunkigi jeone halmeoni moksori geudaero husondeulhante namgyeo duryeogoyo.

    That's why we came. The haenyeo songs are a precious part of our heritage, and we want to leave them to future generations in your own voice before the tradition is lost.

    What's the use of recording it, with no one left to sing it? Every night I wonder who will remember this song once my generation is gone.

    We'll also turn the recorded songs into sheet music and send them to primary schools in Jeju, so they can be used in music lessons.
