   A 한글날 특집 토론, 오늘의 주제는 '신조어가 우리말을 망치는가?'입니다. 먼저 코미디언 박상철 씨, 어떻게 보십니까?

   For our Hangul Day special debate, today's question is 'Is new slang ruining Korean?' First, comedian Park Sangcheol, what's your view?

   C 망치고 있다고 봅니다. 제가 이십 년 전에 방송에서 '바른말 고운 말' 코너를 맡았습니다. 그렇게 캠페인을 했건만, 요즘은 뉴스 자막에도 줄임말이 나옵니다.

   I think it is. Twenty years ago, I hosted a TV segment called 'Proper Words, Kind Words.' For all that campaigning, these days you see abbreviations even in news captions.

   B 뜻밖이라고 하실지 모르겠지만, 저는 걱정하지 않습니다. 신조어는 언어가 살아 있다는 증거입니다. 오히려 너무 빨리 소멸해서 연구하기가 힘들 정도입니다.

   Tteutbakkirago hasilji moreugetjiman, jeoneun geokjeonghaji anseumnida. Sinjoeoneun eoneoga sara itdaneun jeunggeoimnida. Ohiryeo neomu ppalli somyeolhaeseo yeonguhagiga himdeul jeongdoimnida.

   You may find this surprising, but I'm not worried. New slang is evidence that a language is alive. If anything, it dies out so fast that it's hard to study.

   C 교수님이 그런 말씀을 하시면 안 되지요. 학자분들이 우리말의 순수성을 먼저 포기하시면 어떡합니까?

   A professor shouldn't say that. If scholars are the first to give up on the purity of Korean, what are the rest of us to do?

   B 포기가 아니라 관찰입니다. 저희가 신조어를 사전에 올릴라치면 벌써 아무도 안 씁니다. 십 년 넘게 통용되는 신조어는 백 개 중에 하나도 안 됩니다.

   Pogiga anira gwancharimnida. Jeohuiga sinjoeoreul sajeone ollillachimyeon beolsseo amudo an sseumnida. Sip nyeon neomge tongyongdoeneun sinjoeoneun baek gae junge hanado an doemnida.

   It's not giving up, it's observation. Whenever we try to put a new word in the dictionary, nobody's using it any more. Fewer than one in a hundred new words stays in use for more than ten years.

   A 백 개 중에 하나라니 놀랍군요. 그럼 젊은 세대 대표로 스트리머 한소율 씨 의견을 들어 보겠습니다. 방송에서 신조어를 제일 많이 쓰실 것 같은데요.

   Fewer than one in a hundred, that's remarkable. Now let's hear from streamer Han Soyul, representing the younger generation. I imagine you use more slang on your streams than anyone.

   D 사실 저는 방송에서 신조어를 거의 안 씁니다. 제 시청자 절반이 초등학생이라서, 제가 쓰는 말이 그대로 교실로 갑니다.

   Sasil jeoneun bangsongeseo sinjoeoreul geoui an sseumnida. Je sicheongja jeolbani chodeunghaksaengiraseo, jega sseuneun mari geudaero gyosillo gamnida.

   Actually, I hardly use slang on my streams. Half my viewers are primary school children, so whatever words I use go straight into the classroom.

   Pardon? A streamer who doesn't use slang? All the counterarguments I prepared for today have just become useless.

    D 제 지식이라고 해 봐야 방송하면서 주워들은 것뿐이지만, 아이들은 뜻도 모르고 따라 합니다. 비속어에서 나온 말인 줄도 모르고요. 그래서 맞춤법 퀴즈 방송을 따로 합니다.

    What little I know, I've just picked up from streaming, but children copy words without knowing what they mean. Without knowing some of them come from swear words. That's why I run separate spelling quiz streams.

    B 그 부분은 저도 걱정합니다. 비하나 혐오가 담긴 말은 분명히 문제입니다. 하지만 '갓생'처럼 새로운 생활 방식을 표현하는 말까지 막을 필요는 없다고 봅니다.

    Geu bubuneun jeodo geokjeonghamnida. Bihana hyeomoga damgin mareun bunmyeonghi munjeimnida. Hajiman 'gatsaeng'cheoreom saeroun saenghwal bangsigeul pyohyeonhaneun malkkaji mageul piryoneun eopdago bomnida.

    I share that concern. Words that carry contempt or hate are clearly a problem. But I don't think we need to block words like 'godsaeng,' which express a new way of living.

    Bujireonhago gyehoekjeogeuro saneun salmeul malhamnida. Geureonde gyosunim, geunyang 'bujireonhan sam'irago hamyeon an doemnikka? Guji Yeongeoreul seokkeul piryoga isseulkkayo?

    It means living a diligent, well-planned life. But Professor, can't we just say 'a diligent life'? Do we really need to mix in English?

    B '부지런한 삶'과 '갓생'은 느낌이 다릅니다. 갓생에는 작은 목표를 이루며 스스로를 칭찬하는 재미가 들어 있습니다. 새 말은 새 느낌이 필요할 때 생깁니다.

    'Bujireonhan sam'gwa 'gatsaeng'eun neukkimi dareumnida. Gatsaengeneun jageun mokpyoreul irumyeo seuseuroreul chingchanhaneun jaemiga deureo itseumnida. Sae mareun sae neukkimi piryohal ttae saenggimnida.

    'A diligent life' and 'godsaeng' feel different. 'Godsaeng' has the fun of praising yourself as you reach small goals. New words appear when a new feeling needs a name.

    C 오늘 토론이 이상하게 흘러갑니다. 제가 제일 보수적인 사람일 줄 알았는데, 소율 씨가 저보다 더 엄격하시네요.

    Oneul toroni isanghage heulleogamnida. Jega jeil bosujeogin saramil jul aranneunde, Soyul ssiga jeoboda deo eomgyeokasineyo.

    This debate is taking a strange turn. I thought I'd be the most conservative person here, but Soyul is stricter than me.

    I wasn't like this from the start. I changed my mind after reading a comment from a young viewer who got scolded for using my catchphrase on their grandmother.

    Ah, I knew that would come up. Back then, the papers said my catchphrase was destroying the Korean language. The whole country copied it, and yet now nobody remembers it.

    B 바로 그겁니다. 그게 제 주장의 증거입니다. 신조어는 우후죽순처럼 생겼다가 사라집니다. 우리말은 그보다 훨씬 튼튼합니다.

    Baro geugeomnida. Geuge je jujangui jeunggeoimnida. Sinjoeoneun uhujuksuncheoreom saenggyeotdaga sarajimnida. Urimareun geuboda hwolssin teunteunhamnida.

    That's exactly it. That's the evidence for my argument. New words spring up like mushrooms after rain and then vanish. Korean itself is far sturdier than that.

    As you say, Professor, the words may disappear, but the memory of the child who heard them remains. I want to take responsibility for that memory.
