Day 131 of 135

Day 131: Midnight Statement on a Noodle Recall

At midnight in a food company's PR office, Minjae (A), a junior PR officer, and his team manager, Mr. Han (B), draft a statement about a customer's post that has gone viral.

How to study this lesson 4 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
  3. Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
  4. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Yes, it's clear. The batch number's in the shot, so we've identified the factory too. I've written a first draft - could you take a look?

  4. B 읽어 λ³Όκ²Œμš”. 'λ‹Ήμ‚¬λŠ” ν•΄λ‹Ή μ œν’ˆμ„ μ „λŸ‰ νšŒμˆ˜ν•œλ‹€λŠ” 방침을 μ •ν•˜κ³ ...' 벌써 μ „λŸ‰ νšŒμˆ˜μ˜ˆμš”? 이물질 검사 κ²°κ³ΌλŠ” 내일 μ˜€μ „μ—λ‚˜ λ‚˜μ™€μš”.

Let me read it. "The company has decided to recall all of the product in question..." A full recall already? The results of the test on the object won't be in until tomorrow morning.

If we rush to apologise before it's even confirmed that it got in at our factory, it amounts to admitting fault. Legal will hit the roof.

From legal's point of view, sure. But consumers hate "We are looking into it" more than anything. They say it sounds irresponsible.

Then let's split it. Not an apology that admits fault - but we can apologise right now for the worry we've caused.

Yes, exactly. And instead of a full recall, add a line saying we're temporarily suspending sales of products with the same batch number.

Good. Then shall we also promise to publish the results as soon as they're in? That way we show we're not just buying time to hide the truth.

Nice. Buying time without looking like it. Minjae, you're a natural at this job.

I'll take that as a compliment. And can we drop the word "regret"? It's the most hated word in news comment sections.

  16. B '유감'은 λΉΌμš”. μ •μΉ˜μΈ 말투 κ°™μ•„μ„œ μ°¨κ°‘κ²Œ 듀리죠. λŒ€μ‹  고객께 직접 μ—°λ½λ“œλ Έλ‹€λŠ” λ‚΄μš©λ„ λ“€μ–΄κ°€λ©΄ μ’‹κ² μ–΄μš”.

We haven't contacted him yet. If we want to write that, we'd have to do it now. But wouldn't a call at one in the morning be rude?

Jeonhwa malgo mesijireul bonaeyo. Naeil achim pyeonhasin sigane chajaboepgetdago jeongjunghageyo. Jepum sugeodo uriga jikjeop hagoyo.

Not a call - send a message. Politely say we'd like to visit him at a convenient time tomorrow morning. And we'll collect the product ourselves.

  19. A μ•Œκ² μŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€. 그럼 사과, 판맀 쀑단, κ²°κ³Ό 곡개, 고객 연락. μ΄λ ‡κ²Œ λ„€ κ°€μ§€λ‘œ μ •λ¦¬ν• κ²Œμš”.

Algetseumnida. Geureom sagwa, panmae jungdan, gyeolgwa gonggae, gogaek yeollak. Ireoke ne gajiro jeongnihalgeyo.

Got it. So: apology, sales suspension, publishing the results, contacting the customer. I'll organise it around those four points.

  20. B μ’‹μ•„μš”. 그리고 제λͺ©μ—μ„œ 'ν•΄λͺ…'μ΄λΌλŠ” λ‹¨μ–΄λŠ” λΉΌμš”. ν•΄λͺ…ν•˜λŠ” μˆœκ°„ λ³€λͺ…μ²˜λŸΌ λ“€λ¦¬κ±°λ“ μš”.

Good. And take the word "clarification" out of the heading. The moment you start clarifying, it sounds like an excuse.

  21. A 그럼 제λͺ©μ€ '컡라면 이물질 κ΄€λ ¨ μ•ˆλ‚΄ 말씀'으둜 ν• κΉŒμš”? μ’€ λ°‹λ°‹ν•œλ°μš”.

Then shall we go with "Notice regarding a foreign object in our cup ramyeon"? It's a bit bland.

Minmitan ge joayo. Wigi ttaeneun nune ttuineun ge jeil wiheomhaeyo. Daepyonim gyeoljaeman badeumyeon baro ollijyo.

Bland is good. In a crisis, standing out is the most dangerous thing. Once the CEO signs off, we post it.

Won't the CEO be asleep? It's one in the morning.

No CEO sleeps on a night like this. Oh, he's calling already. Minjae, be ready for the possibility that once the results are in tomorrow, we announce a full recall after all.

  25. A λ„€. 그럼 κ·Έλ•ŒλŠ” 제 μ΄ˆμ•ˆμ΄ λ‹€μ‹œ μ‚΄μ•„λ‚˜λŠ” κ±°λ„€μš”. μ§€μš°μ§€ 말고 μ €μž₯ν•΄ λ‘˜κ²Œμš”.

Ne. Geureom geuttaeneun je choani dasi sarananeun geoneyo. Jiuji malgo jeojanghae dulgeyo.

Right. Then my first draft comes back to life. I'll save it instead of deleting it.
