Day 28: Audition Lines for a Joseon Princess

   A 언니, 한 번만 맞춰 줘. 내일 오디션이 사극 공주 역인데, 왕 대사를 받아 줄 사람이 없어.

   Eonni, han beonman matchwo jwo. Naeil odisyeoni sageuk gongju yeoginde, wang daesareul bada jul sarami eopseo.

   Please, just run it with me once. Tomorrow's audition is for a princess in a period drama, and I've got nobody to read the king's lines.

   At last, my period-drama debut. Give me the script. I'll do the king, nice deep voice and all.

   A 목소리 깔지 말고 그냥 읽기만 해. 오디션은 내가 보는 거야. 여기부터, 왕이 공주를 궁 밖으로 떠나보내는 장면.

   Moksori kkalji malgo geunyang ilgiman hae. Odisyeoneun naega boneun geoya. Yeogibuteo, wangi gongjureul gung bakkeuro tteonabonaeneun jangmyeon.

   No deep voice, just read it. I'm the one auditioning. From here, the scene where the king sends the princess away from the palace.

   B 흠흠. "공주는 듣거라! 그 일일랑 다시는 입에 올리지 말거라! 과인의 뜻은 이미 정해졌느니라!" 어때, 소름 돋지?

   Heumheum. "Gongjuneun deutgeora! Geu irillang dasineun ibe olliji malgeora! Gwainui tteuseun imi jeonghaejyeonneunira!" Eottae, soreum dotji?

   Ahem. 'Hear me, Princess! Never speak of that matter again! Our mind is made up!' Well? Goosebumps, right?

   A 언니, 그렇게 고래고래 소리 지르는 장면이 아니야. 지문에 '조용히, 울음을 삼키며'라고 쓰여 있잖아. 옆집까지 다 들리겠어.

   Eonni, geureoke goraegorae sori jireuneun jangmyeoni aniya. Jimune 'joyonghi, ureumeul samkimyeo'rago sseuyeo itjana. Yeopjipkkaji da deulligesseo.

   It's not a scene where you bellow like that. The stage directions say 'quietly, holding back tears'. The neighbours will hear you.

   Who's scared of a king who talks quietly? The whole fun of period dramas is booming out your lines with the veins popping in your neck.

   Whatever. My line now. 'Father, this kindness I shall not forget, even in death.'

   B 잠깐. 딸이 아버지 앞에서 '잊지 않으리라'가 뭐야? 그건 혼잣말할 때 쓰는 어투잖아. 공주라도 임금 앞에서는 '잊지 않겠사옵니다' 해야지.

   Jamkkan. Ttari abeoji apeseo 'itji aneurira'ga mwoya? Geugeon honjanmalhal ttae sseuneun eotujana. Gongjurado imgeum apeseoneun 'itji anketsaomnida' haeyaji.

   Wait. A daughter saying 'I shall not forget' like that to her father? That's how you talk to yourself. Even a princess would have to say something humble to the king, like 'I shall never forget it, Your Majesty.'

   A 언니가 조선 시대에 살아 봤어? 작가님이 이렇게 쓰셨으면 다 이유가 있겠지. 나는 대본대로 할 거야.

   Eonniga Joseon sidaee sara bwasseo? Jakganimi ireoke sseusyeosseumyeon da iyuga itgetji. Naneun daebondaero hal geoya.

   Did you live in the Joseon era? If the writer wrote it this way, there must be a reason. I'm sticking to the script.

    B 이유는 무슨. 요즘 사극 보면 말투만 대충 흉내 내는 경우가 얼마나 많은데. 옛날 공주가 임금 앞에서 그렇게 버릇없이 말했으면 불호령이 떨어졌을걸.

    Reason, my foot. So many period dramas these days just vaguely imitate the old way of talking. If a real princess had spoken to the king that disrespectfully, she'd have been given a thundering telling-off.

    A 어, 잠깐만. 이 대사는 왕이 퇴장한 다음에 공주가 혼자 하는 걸로 따로 나와 있네. 내가 줄을 잘못 읽었어.

    Eo, jamkkanman. I daesaneun wangi toejanghan daeume gongjuga honja haneun geollo ttaro nawa inne. Naega jureul jalmot ilgeosseo.

    Oh, hang on. This line is set apart; the princess says it on her own after the king leaves. I read the wrong line.

    B 거 봐, 내 말이 맞지? 그럼 왕 앞에서는 뭐라고 하는데?

    Geo bwa, nae mari matji? Geureom wang apeseoneun mworago haneunde?

    See, I was right, wasn't I? So what does she say in front of the king?

    A "아바마마, 소녀 걱정일랑 거두시옵소서. 어디에 가든 몸 성히 지내겠사옵니다." 이게 왕 앞에서 하는 대사고.

    "Abamama, sonyeo geokjeongillang geodusiopsoseo. Eodie gadeun mom seonghi jinaegetsaomnida." Ige wang apeseo haneun daesago.

    'Father, put aside your worries for me. Wherever I go, I shall keep well.' That's the line in front of the king.

    B 오, 그건 기품이 있네. 근데 '거두시옵소서'를 너무 빨리 말해. 궁에서 자란 사람은 그렇게 서두르지 않아.

    O, geugeon gipumi inne. Geunde 'geodusiopsoseo'reul neomu ppalli malhae. Gungeseo jaran sarameun geureoke seodureuji ana.

    Ooh, now that has some dignity. But you're rushing 'put aside'. Someone raised in a palace wouldn't hurry like that.

    A 언니는 궁에서 자란 사람을 본 적도 없으면서 왜 이렇게 아는 척이야? 아까는 왕 대사를 무슨 씨름 선수처럼 읽더니.

    Eonnineun gungeseo jaran sarameul bon jeokdo eopseumyeonseo wae ireoke aneun cheogiya? Akkaneun wang daesareul museun ssireum seonsucheoreom ikdeoni.

    You've never even met anyone raised in a palace, so why are you such a know-it-all? A minute ago you read the king like a wrestler.

    B 나 대학 때 국문과였거든? 조선 시대 한글 편지를 한 학기 내내 읽었어. 공주들 편지는 생각보다 훨씬 부드럽고 애틋해.

    Na daehak ttae gungmungwayeotgeodeun? Joseon sidae hangeul pyeonjireul han hakgi naenae ilgeosseo. Gongjudeul pyeonjineun saenggakboda hwolssin budeureopgo aeteutae.

    I did Korean literature at university, remember? I read Joseon-era letters for a whole semester. The princesses' letters are much gentler and more tender than you'd think.

    A 그럼 마지막 대사 좀 봐 줘. 혼자 남아서 하는 거. "내 반드시 이 궁으로 돌아오리라. 그날까지 눈물일랑 아껴 두리라."

    Geureom majimak daesa jom bwa jwo. Honja namaseo haneun geo. "Nae bandeusi i gungeuro doraorira. Geunalkkaji nunmurillang akkyeo durira."

    Then check my last line. The one where she's alone. 'I shall return to this palace, I swear it. Until that day, my tears I shall save.'

    B 그건 혼잣말이니까 딱 맞네. 다만 울지 말고 감정을 절제해서, 이를 악물고 해 봐. 우는 건 앞 장면에서 충분히 했잖아.

    Geugeon honjanmarinikka ttak manne. Daman ulji malgo gamjeongeul jeoljehaeseo, ireul angmulgo hae bwa. Uneun geon ap jangmyeoneseo chungbunhi haetjana.

    That's her talking to herself, so it fits perfectly. But don't cry; hold your feelings in and grit your teeth. She's done enough crying in the earlier scene.

    A 이를 악물고, 이렇게? "내 반드시 이 궁으로 돌아오리라." 오, 확실히 이게 더 독해 보이긴 하네.

    Ireul angmulgo, ireoke? "Nae bandeusi i gungeuro doraorira." O, hwaksilhi ige deo dokae boigin hane.

    Gritting my teeth, like this? 'I shall return to this palace, I swear it.' Oh, that does look tougher.

    B 좋아, 소름 돋았어. 그 표정 그대로 내일 가서 해. 대신 붙으면 나 왕 역할로 특별 출연시켜 주는 거다.

    Joa, soreum dodasseo. Geu pyojeong geudaero naeil gaseo hae. Daesin buteumyeon na wang yeokhallo teukbyeol churyeonsikyeo juneun geoda.

    Good, that gave me goosebumps. Do it with exactly that face tomorrow. But if you get the part, you're getting me a cameo as the king.

    A 그건 절대 안 돼. 언니가 왕 하면 감독님이 첫 대사 듣고 귀 막고 나가실 거야.

    No way. If you played the king, the director would cover his ears and walk out after your first line.
