   Good evening, and welcome to Night of Books. Tonight we've invited three guests to take on the question: are web novels literature too?

   Speaking as a critic, let me start with my conclusion. Web novels may be excellent products, but it's hard to call them literature.

   D 익숙한 말씀입니다. 연재를 시작한 뒤로 그런 비판깨나 받았습니다. 문장이 가볍다, 매번 비슷하다, 통속적이다, 그런 말들이요.

   Iksukan malsseumimnida. Yeonjaereul sijakan dwiro geureon bipankkaena badatseumnida. Munjangi gabyeopda, maebeon biseutada, tongsokjeogida, geureon maldeuriyo.

   It's a familiar argument. Since I started serialising, I've taken plenty of criticism like that. That the writing is light, that it's always the same, that it's pulp - that sort of thing.

   C 제 말이 바로 그겁니다. 독자들은 줄거리만 쫓아서 하룻밤에 백 화씩 읽어 치웁니다. 문장을 음미할 틈이 없지요.

   That's exactly my point. Readers chase the plot and polish off a hundred episodes a night. They have no time to savour the sentences.

   D 백 화를 읽어 치운다는 건 그만큼 다음 이야기가 궁금하다는 뜻 아닐까요? 독자를 붙잡는 것도 작가의 능력입니다.

   Doesn't getting through a hundred episodes mean they're that desperate to know what happens next? Holding on to readers is a writer's skill too.

   Then I'll continue. Literature is writing that lasts. Popularity isn't the same as artistic merit, and you can't measure value by view counts.

    D 조회 수 말씀이 나왔으니 말씀드리겠습니다. 제 작품은 삼 년 동안 연재되면서 누적 조회 수가 이억 회를 넘었습니다.

    I'm not trying to boast about numbers. Many of those readers told me they'd never read a single book in their lives. They said that after reading my novel, they went into a bookshop for the first time.

    C 감동적인 이야기지만, 독자가 많다고 문학이 되는 건 아닙니다. 베스트셀러가 다 걸작으로 남지는 않으니까요.

    That's a touching story, but having many readers doesn't make something literature. Not every bestseller lives on as a masterpiece, after all.

    B 조선 시대에도 소설은 잡스러운 글 취급을 받았습니다. 그 소설들이 지금은 교과서에 실려 있지요. 문학인지 아닌지는 결국 시간이 판단할 일입니다.

    In the Joseon dynasty, novels were dismissed as vulgar writing too. Now those same novels are in school textbooks. Whether something is literature is, in the end, for time to judge.
