   Have you read all of this class's writing assignments? I stopped about halfway through. There were too many words I didn't know.

   Why, is the content hard? The topic was 'One thing that changed me this year,' so they must all have written seriously.

   A 진지하긴 한데 신조어가 너무 많아요. 선생님, 이거 한번 맞혀 보세요. '중꺾마'가 무슨 뜻이게요?

   Jinjihagin hande sinjoeoga neomu manayo. Seonsaengnim, igeo hanbeon machyeo boseyo. 'Jungkkeongma'ga museun tteusigeyo?

   They're serious, but there's so much new slang. Here, try and guess this one. What do you think 'jung-kkeok-ma' means?

   B 중꺾마... 음, '중학생이 꺾은 마음'? 아니, '중간고사 망치면 마음이 꺾인다'?

   Jungkkeongma... eum, 'junghaksaengi kkeokkeun maeum'? Ani, 'junggangosa mangchimyeon maeumi kkeokkinda'?

   Jung-kkeok-ma... Hmm, 'a heart a middle schooler broke'? No, wait - 'fail your midterms and your heart breaks'?

   A 땡이에요. '중요한 건 꺾이지 않는 마음'이요. 월드컵 때 유행한 말이에요.

   Ttaengieyo. 'Jungyohan geon kkeokkiji anneun maeum'iyo. Woldeukeop ttae yuhaenghan marieyo.

   Wrong! It's 'What matters is a heart that won't break.' It caught on during the World Cup.

   B 아, 중요한 건 꺾이지 않는 마음이구만. 줄여 놓으니까 무슨 암호 같네요.

   Ah, so it's 'what matters is a heart that won't break.' Shortened like that, it looks like some kind of code.

   A 그다음 건 더 어려워요. '스불재'는 뭐게요? 이 학생은 기말고사 얘기를 쓰면서 이 말을 세 번이나 썼어요.

   Geudaeum geon deo eoryeowoyo. 'Seubuljae'neun mwogeyo? I haksaengeun gimalgosa yaegireul sseumyeonseo i mareul se beonina sseosseoyo.

   The next one's harder. What's 'seu-bul-jae'? This student used it three times while writing about finals.

   B 스... '스스로 불러온 재앙'? 벼락치기하다가 망했다는 얘기면 딱 맞는데요.

   Seu... 'seuseuro bulleoon jaeang'? Byeorakchigihadaga manghaetdaneun yaegimyeon ttak manneundeyo.

   Seu... 'a disaster you brought on yourself'? If it's about cramming and flunking, that would fit perfectly.

   Whoa, you got it! How did you know? Lots of my friends don't even know that one.

    B 국어 교사 삼십 년이면 줄임말 푸는 데는 도사가 되거든요. 앞뒤 맥락만 보면 대충 나와요.

    Thirty years of teaching Korean makes you a master at decoding abbreviations. You can usually work it out from the context.

    A 그래도 문제는 점수예요. 작문 평가 기준에 '표준어를 사용하여 쓴다'가 있잖아요. 저는 감점해야 한다고 생각해요.

    Geuraedo munjeneun jeomsuyeyo. Jangmun pyeongga gijune 'pyojuneoreul sayonghayeo sseunda'ga itjanayo. Jeoneun gamjeomhaeya handago saenggakaeyo.

    But the problem is the marks. The writing rubric includes 'writes in standard Korean.' I think we should take marks off.

    My, the young teacher is stricter than I am. I thought it'd be the other way round.

    A 제가 학생 때 신조어 썼다가 감점을 많이 당했거든요. 그리고 규칙은 규칙이잖아요.

    When I was a student, I lost a lot of marks for using slang. And rules are rules.

    B 규칙도 중요하죠. 그런데 이 학생 글을 끝까지 읽어 봤어요? '스불재'라고 써 놓고 자기가 왜 그렇게 됐는지 한 문단이나 분석했어요.

    Rules matter, of course. But did you read this student's essay to the end? After writing 'seu-bul-jae,' she spent a whole paragraph analysing how it happened to her.

    A 네, 그 문단은 좋았어요. 그래도 첫 문장부터 줄임말이면 읽는 사람이 이해를 못 하잖아요. 비속어랑 뭐가 다른지도 모르겠고요.

    Ne, geu mundaneun joasseoyo. Geuraedo cheot munjangbuteo jurimmarimyeon ingneun sarami ihaereul mot hajanayo. Bisogeorang mwoga dareunjido moreugetgoyo.

    Yes, that paragraph was good. But if it opens with an abbreviation, the reader can't understand it. And I'm not sure how it's any different from vulgar slang.

    B 비속어하고는 다르죠. 그러니까 신조어를 쓴 것 자체보다, 뜻을 안 풀어 쓴 걸 문제 삼으면 어때요?

    Bisogeohagoneun dareujyo. Geureonikka sinjoeoreul sseun geot jacheboda, tteuseul an pureo sseun geol munje sameumyeon eottaeyo?

    It's different from vulgar slang. So rather than the new words themselves, how about we take issue with them not spelling out what they mean?

    A 뜻을 풀어 쓰면 감점을 안 한다는 말씀이세요? 그러면 기준이 너무 느슨해지지 않을까요?

    You mean no deduction if they explain the meaning? Wouldn't that make the standard too loose?

    B 언어는 원래 변하잖아요. 그 변화를 무조건 막을 수는 없어요. 내가 학생 때는 '짱'도 쓰면 혼나는 말이었는데, 지금은 다들 쓰잖아요.

    Eoneoneun wollae byeonhajanayo. Geu byeonhwareul mujogeon mageul suneun eopseoyo. Naega haksaeng ttaeneun 'jjang'do sseumyeon honnaneun marieonneunde, jigeumeun dadeul sseujanayo.

    Language always changes. You can't just block every change. When I was a student, even 'jjang' was a word you got told off for, and now everyone uses it.

    I got caught using it and even had to write a letter of apology, I'll have you know. So I do understand these kids a little.

    Then let's do this. Take off just one point, and write next to it, 'Great expression, but please write the meaning too.'
