Day 79: Wrong Jeolla Words in Yeosu

   B 너 요즘 전라도 말 배운다는 얘기 들었어. 회사 사람들이 너 벌써 반은 여수 사람 됐다던데?

   Neo yojeum Jeollado mal baeundaneun yaegi deureosseo. Hoesa saramdeuri neo beolsseo baneun Yeosu saram dwaetdadeonde?

   I heard you're learning the Jeolla dialect these days. People at your work say you're already half a Yeosu local?

   A 소문 빠르네. 들어 봐. '이 집 게장 겁나 맛있당께!' 어때, 억양 완벽하지?

   Somun ppareune. Deureo bwa. 'I jip Gejang geomna masitdangkke!' Eottae, eogyang wanbyeokaji?

   Word travels fast. Listen: 'The crab here is crazy good, I'm tellin' ya!' So? Perfect accent, right?

   B 억양은... 음, 서울 사람이 광고 찍는 것 같아. 그리고 '당께'는 아무 데나 붙이는 게 아니야.

   Eogyangeun... eum, Seoul sarami gwanggo jjingneun geot gata. Geurigo 'dangkke'neun amu dena buchineun ge aniya.

   The accent... hm, it sounds like a Seoul person doing a commercial. And you can't just stick 'dangkke' on the end of anything.

   Wae? Uri tim mangnaeneun malkkeunmada 'dangkke' buchideonde.

   Why not? The youngest on my team puts 'dangkke' at the end of every sentence.

   B 그건 '내 말이 맞다니까' 하고 우길 때 쓰는 거야. 게장 맛있는 건 다 아는데 우길 일이 없잖아.

   Geugeon 'nae mari matdanikka' hago ugil ttae sseuneun geoya. Gejang masinneun geon da aneunde ugil iri eopjana.

   You say that when you're insisting, like 'I'm telling you, I'm right.' Everyone knows the crab's good, so there's nothing to insist on.

   A 아, 그럼 그냥 '겁나 맛있네'는 괜찮아?

   A, geureom geunyang 'geomna masinne'neun gwaenchana?

   Oh. So is just 'crazy good' okay?

   B 그건 괜찮아. 근데 여기 사람들은 이럴 때 '게미가 있다'고 해. 씹을수록 자꾸 당기는 맛이라는 뜻이야.

   Geugeon gwaenchana. Geunde yeogi saramdeureun ireol ttae 'gemiga itda'go hae. Ssibeulsurok jakku danggineun masiraneun tteusiya.

   That's fine. But people here would say it 'has gemi.' It means a flavour that keeps drawing you back the more you chew.

   Crab with 'gemi'? That's not a pun? You're pulling the Seoul girl's leg, aren't you?

   I'm serious. My grandma always said it when she ate a side dish she liked. 'My, that's got gemi.'

    Joa, jeogeo dulge. Geureom igeotdo bwa jwo. Eoje bujangnimi hoeuie neutge osyeoseo naega 'atta, jinghage neujeusyeonneyo' haetgeodeun.

    Okay, noting that down. Then check this one too. Yesterday my manager came late to a meeting, and I said, 'My, you're jinghage late, sir.'

    B '징하다'는 '아, 지겹다, 질린다' 할 때 쓰는 말이야. 친구끼리야 웃자고 하는 말이지만, 윗사람한테 쓰면 어감이 완전히 달라져. '진짜 지겹게도 늦으시네요'로 들려.

    'Jinghada'neun 'a, jigyeopda, jillinda' hal ttae sseuneun mariya. Chingukkiriya utjago haneun marijiman, witsaramhante sseumyeon eogami wanjeonhi dallajyeo. 'Jinjja jigyeopgedo neujeusineyo'ro deullyeo.

    'Jinghada' is what you say when something's tiresome, like 'ugh, I'm sick of it.' Between friends it's a joke, but say it to your boss and it comes across completely differently. It sounds like 'You're late again, how tiresome.'

    A 어쩐지 다들 웃는데 부장님만 안 웃으시더라. 아, 민망해. 사과해야 할까?

    Eojjeonji dadeul unneunde bujangnimman an useusideora. A, minmanghae. Sagwahaeya halkka?

    No wonder everyone laughed except him. Oh, how embarrassing. Should I apologise?

    Take him a coffee tomorrow and say, 'I used it without knowing what it meant.' Older people here find that kind of thing cute and let it go.

    B '싸게 싸게 오씨요'도 조심해. '빨리빨리 오세요'라는 뜻인데, 어른한테 쓰면 재촉하는 것처럼 들려서 버릇없어 보일 수 있어.

    'Ssage ssage ossiyo'do josimhae. 'Ppallippalli oseyo'raneun tteusinde, eoreunhante sseumyeon jaechokaneun geotcheoreom deullyeoseo beoreuseopseo boil su isseo.

    Watch out for 'ssage ssage ossiyo' too. It means 'please hurry up and come,' but say it to an elder and it sounds like you're rushing them, which can come across as rude.

    A 그렇구나. 사투리는 억양만 따라 하면 되는 줄 알았는데, 누구한테 쓰느냐가 더 중요하네.

    Geureokuna. Saturineun eogyangman ttara hamyeon doeneun jul aranneunde, nuguhante sseuneunyaga deo jungyohane.

    I see. I thought dialect was just about copying the accent, but who you say it to matters more.

    Exactly. With elders, don't force the imitation. Just be polite in standard Korean. The dialect will rub off on you once you're close to people.
