Day 140: Teacher Explains Chuseok Etiquette

In a Korean class, Sophie (A), a foreign student, tells her teacher, Ms. Lee (B), that her friend Minji's family has invited her for Chuseok.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

Oh, how lovely. You'll get to experience a Korean holiday first-hand.
A 근데 좀 걱정돼요. 제가 뭘 조심해야 돼요?

Geunde jom geokjeongdwaeyo. Jega mwol josimhaeya dwaeyo?

But I'm a bit worried. What should I be careful about?
B 먼저 어른들께 인사를 잘하면 돼요. 그리고 추석 아침에는 보통 차례를 지내요.

Meonjeo eoreundeulkke insareul jalhamyeon dwaeyo. Geurigo chuseok achimeneun botong charyereul jinaeyo.

First, just greet the older family members properly. And on Chuseok morning, families usually hold a charye.
A 차례요? 그게 뭐예요?

Charyeyo? Geuge mwoyeyo?

A charye? What's that?
B 조상님께 음식을 차려 놓고 감사 인사를 드리는 거예요. 옛날부터 그렇게 해 왔어요.

Josangnimkke eumsigeul charyeo noko gamsa insareul deurineun geoyeyo. Yennalbuteo geureoke hae wasseoyo.

You set out food for your ancestors and thank them. People have done it that way for a very long time.
A 요즘도 집집마다 다 그렇게 해요?

Yojeumdo jipjimmada da geureoke haeyo?

Does every family still do it these days?
B 집마다 달라요. 민지네는 할아버지가 계시니까 오랫동안 차례를 지내 왔을 거예요.

Jimmada dallayo. Minjineneun harabeojiga gyesinikka oraetdongan charyereul jinae wasseul geoyeyo.

It depends on the family. Minji still has her grandfather, so they've probably been doing it for years.
A 선물은 뭘 가져가면 좋을까요?

What should I take as a gift?
B 과일 한 상자나 한과 세트가 무난해요. 너무 비싼 건 오히려 부담스러워하실 거예요.

Gwail han sangjana hangwa seteuga munanhaeyo. Neomu bissan geon ohiryeo budamseureowohasil geoyeyo.

A box of fruit or a set of traditional sweets is a safe choice. Something too expensive might actually make them uncomfortable.
A 송편도 같이 만들기로 했어요. 근데 저는 손이 느려서 걱정이에요.

Songpyeondo gachi mandeulgiro haesseoyo. Geunde jeoneun soni neuryeoseo geokjeongieyo.

We're also going to make songpyeon together. But I'm slow with my hands, so I'm worried.
B 괜찮아요. 제가 송편 빚는 법을 보여 줄 테니까 수업 끝나고 잠깐 남으세요.
