Day 141: Tree-Planting Date on Arbor Day

Early on Arbor Day, Jieun (A) meets her boyfriend Sungmin (B), who thought they were going on an ordinary date.

It's Arbor Day, remember? I signed us both up to plant trees.
B 나무? 나는 늦잠 자고 영화 보는 데이트를 생각했는데.

Trees? I was picturing a lie-in and a film.
A 미리 신청해야 나무를 받을 수 있어서 한 달 전에 해 놨지.

You have to sign up in advance to get a tree, so I did it a month ago.
B 장갑이나 삽은? 우리 아무것도 안 챙겼잖아.

What about gloves and a shovel? We haven't brought anything.
A 걱정 마. 장갑이고 삽이고 거기서 다 줘. 아, 저기 구청 직원분들이 나무 나눠 주신다.

Geokjeong ma. Janggabigo sabigo geogiseo da jwo. A, jeogi gucheong jigwonbundeuri namu nanwo jusinda.

Don't worry. Gloves, shovels, they give you everything there. Oh, look, the district office staff are handing out the trees.
B 오, 이게 소나무야? 생각보다 훨씬 작네.

O, ige sonamuya? Saenggakboda hwolssin jangne.

Oh, is this a pine tree? It's much smaller than I thought.
A 처음에 물을 충분히 줘야 뿌리를 잘 내려. 물 좀 떠 와.

Cheoeume mureul chungbunhi jwoya ppurireul jal naeryeo. Mul jom tteo wa.

You have to water it well at the start so it takes root. Go and fetch some water.
B 여기 물. 근데 이 나무 이름 지어 줘도 돼? '지은이'라고 할래.

Yeogi mul. Geunde i namu ireum jieo jwodo dwae? 'Jieuni'rago hallae.

Here's the water. Can I give this tree a name? I'm calling it "Jieun".
A 하하, 아까 투덜대던 사람 맞아?

Haha, akka tudeoldaedeon saram maja?

Ha ha, are you the same guy who was grumbling earlier?
B 해 보니까 재밌네. 내년 식목일에도 오자. 그때는 내가 먼저 신청할게.
