Day 3: Thin Walls, Loud Phone Calls

On campus, first-year student Junho (A) tells his senior Taeyang (B) about the noisy man in the studio flat next door.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

I haven't been sleeping properly lately. I'm exhausted.
B 왜? 과제 때문에?

Wae? Gwaje ttaemune?

Why? Assignments?
A 아니요, 옆집 남자 때문에요. 밤 열두 시 넘어서까지 큰 소리로 통화를 해요.

Aniyo, yeopjip namja ttaemuneyo. Bam yeoldu si neomeoseokkaji keun soriro tonghwareul haeyo.

No, it's the guy next door. He talks loudly on the phone until past midnight.
B 원룸은 벽이 얇아서 다 들려. 그 사람한테 말해 본 적 있어?

Wollumeun byeogi yalbaseo da deullyeo. Geu saramhante malhae bon jeok isseo?

Studio walls are thin, so you hear everything. Have you ever said anything to him?
A 아직요. 모르는 사람한테 말하기가 좀 그래서요.

Ajigyo. Moreuneun saramhante malhagiga jom geuraeseoyo.

Not yet. It feels awkward to say something to a stranger.
B 그럼 오늘 밤에도 시끄럽거든 문에 메모를 붙여. 얼굴 보고 말하는 것보다 편해.

Geureom oneul bamedo sikkeureopgeodeun mune memoreul buchyeo. Eolgul bogo malhaneun geotboda pyeonhae.

Then if he's loud again tonight, stick a note on his door. It's easier than saying it to his face.
A 메모를 보고 화내면 어떡해요?

What if he reads the note and gets angry?
B 보통은 그걸로 끝나. 그래도 안 되거든 집주인한테 말해. 주인이 조용히 하게 할 거야.

Botongeun geugeollo kkeunna. Geuraedo an doegeodeun jipjuinhante malhae. Juini joyonghi hage hal geoya.

Usually that settles it. If that still doesn't work, tell the landlord. He'll make him keep it down.
A 메모는 어떻게 써요?

What do I put in the note?
B '옆집입니다. 밤에 통화 소리가 다 들립니다. 조금만 조용히 부탁드립니다.' 이 정도면 돼.

'Yeopjibimnida. Bame tonghwa soriga da deullimnida. Jogeumman joyonghi butakdeurimnida.' I jeongdomyeon dwae.

'I'm your neighbour. I can hear your phone calls at night. Please keep it down a little.' That's all you need.
A 와, 바로 나오네요. 선배도 이런 메모 써 본 적 있어요?

Wa, baro naoneyo. Seonbaedo ireon memo sseo bon jeok isseoyo?

Wow, that came out fast. Have you written one of these before?
B 아니, 받아 본 적 있어. 작년에 내가 그 옆집 남자였어.

Ani, bada bon jeok isseo. Jangnyeone naega geu yeopjip namjayeosseo.

No, but I've had one. Last year, I was the guy next door.
