Day 93: Texting the New Boss Politely

At a café after work, Yujin (A), who has just started her first job, asks her friend Daeun (B) for help with a text from her team leader.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

What did it say?
A "유진 씨, 내일 회의 자료 준비됐어요?" 이렇게. 그냥 "네"라고 보내면 이상해?

"Yujin ssi, naeil hoeui jaryo junbidwaesseoyo?" Ireoke. Geunyang "ne"rago bonaemyeon isanghae?

'Yujin, are the materials for tomorrow's meeting ready?' Like that. Is it weird if I just send 'Yes'?
B "네" 하나만 보내면 좀 차갑지. "네, 준비됐습니다"가 제일 안전해.

"Ne" hanaman bonaemyeon jom chagapji. "Ne, junbidwaetseumnida"ga jeil anjeonhae.

Just 'Yes' is a bit cold. 'Yes, they're ready' is the safest.
A 그럼 "넵"은? 요즘 회사에서 다 "넵" 쓰잖아.

Geureom "nep"eun? Yojeum hoesaeseo da "nep" sseujana.

What about 'Yep!'? Everyone at work uses 'yep' these days.
B "넵"도 괜찮아. 근데 팀장님이 먼저 쓰기 전에는 조심해.

"Nep"do gwaenchana. Geunde timjangnimi meonjeo sseugi jeoneneun josimhae.

'Yep' is fine too. But be careful with it until your team leader uses it first.
A 그럼 팀장님이 "언제까지 돼요?" 하면 "내일요"라고 해도 돼?

Geureom timjangnimi "eonjekkaji dwaeyo?" Hamyeon "naeiryo"rago haedo dwae?

Then if my team leader asks, 'When can you have it done?' can I say 'Naeil-yo'?
B "내일요"는 괜찮아. 근데 "내일"만 쓰면 반말이야. 요를 붙여야지 예의 있게 들려.

"Naeiryo"neun gwaenchana. Geunde "naeil"man sseumyeon banmariya. Yoreul buchyeoyaji yeui itge deullyeo.

'Naeil-yo' is fine. But just 'naeil' on its own is casual speech. You have to add yo for it to sound polite.
A 아, 어렵다. 어제는 팀장님이 "유진 씨?" 해서 "저요?" 했는데, 그건 괜찮았어?

A, eoryeopda. Eojeneun timjangnimi "Yujin ssi?" Haeseo "jeoyo?" Haenneunde, geugeon gwaenchanasseo?

Ugh, this is hard. Yesterday my team leader said 'Yujin?' and I said 'Jeo-yo?' Was that okay?
B 응, "저요?"는 괜찮아. "나?"라고 했으면 큰일 났지.

Eung, "jeoyo?"neun gwaenchana. "Na?"rago haesseumyeon keunil natji.

Yeah, 'Jeo-yo?' is fine. If you'd said 'Na?', that would have been a disaster.
A 하하, 그건 나도 알아. 그럼 지금 "네, 준비됐습니다"라고 보낸다.

Haha, geugeon nado ara. Geureom jigeum "ne, junbidwaetseumnida"rago bonaenda.

Ha ha, even I know that. Okay, I'm sending 'Yes, they're ready' now.
