Day 96: Kimjang Lesson at the Welfare Centre

At a welfare centre's kimchi-making day, Tuan (A), a student volunteer from Vietnam, works beside Soonja (B), an older resident of the neighbourhood.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

Ma'am, that's a lot of cabbage! You're doing all of it today?
B 그럼. 이백 포기다. 혼자 사는 어르신들한테 다 나눠 드릴 거야.

Geureom. Ibaek pogida. Honja saneun eoreusindeulhante da nanwo deuril geoya.

Of course. Two hundred heads. It's all going to older people who live alone.
A 이백 포기요? 베트남에서는 이렇게 많이 만드는 거 못 봤어요.

Ibaek pogiyo? Beteunameseoneun ireoke mani mandeuneun geo mot bwasseoyo.

Two hundred? In Vietnam I've never seen anyone make this much.
B 그러니까 김장이지. 자, 장갑 끼고 같이 버무리자.

Geureonikka gimjangiji. Ja, janggap kkigo gachi beomurija.

That's what kimjang is. Now, put your gloves on and let's mix it in together.
A 장갑이요? 어떡하죠? 저 안 가져왔는데요.

Janggabiyo? Eotteokajyo? Jeo an gajyeowanneundeyo.

Gloves? Oh no. I didn't bring any.
B 공지 못 봤니? 저기 벽에 붙어 있잖아.

Gongji mot bwanni? Jeogi byeoge buteo itjana.

Didn't you see the notice? It's up there on the wall.
A 아, "재료는 센터에서 준비하나 장갑은 각자 가져오십시오." 진짜네요.

A, "jaeryoneun senteoeseo junbihana janggabeun gakja gajyeoosipsio." Jinjjaneyo.

Oh. "The centre provides the ingredients, but please bring your own gloves." So it does.
B 괜찮다, 하나 더 있다. 자, 양념을 잎 사이사이에 골고루 발라.

Gwaenchanta, hana deo itda. Ja, yangnyeomeul ip saisaie golgoru balla.

Never mind, I've got a spare pair. Here, spread the seasoning evenly between the leaves.
A 이렇게요? 근데 고춧가루를 이렇게 많이 넣어요? 벌써 눈이 매워요.

Ireokeyo? Geunde gochutgarureul ireoke mani neoeoyo? Beolsseo nuni maewoyo.

Like this? But you put in this much chilli powder? My eyes are stinging already.
B 하하, 이 정도는 넣어야 맛있다. 이제 맛 좀 보자.

Haha, i jeongdoneun neoeoya masitda. Ije mat jom boja.

Ha ha, you need at least this much for it to taste good. Now, let's have a taste.
A 음... 맵지만 진짜 맛있어요! 식당 김치보다 훨씬 맛있네요.

Eum... maepjiman jinjja masisseoyo! Sikdang gimchiboda hwolssin masinneyo.

Mm... it's spicy, but it's really good! So much better than restaurant kimchi.
