Day 97: Helping Dad Practise for an Interview

The evening before his father Jeongho (B) has a job interview, Doyun (A), his young son, offers to help him practise at home.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dad, your interview's tomorrow, right? I'll be the interviewer.
B 좋지. 안 그래도 면접 준비한다고 요즘 잠도 잘 못 잤어.

Sounds good. I've hardly slept lately, what with getting ready for it.
A 그럼 시작한다. 첫 번째 질문입니다. 라면을 잘 끓이십니까?

Okay, here we go. First question. Are you good at making ramyeon?
B 하하, 면접에서 그런 걸 누가 물어봐? 진짜 질문 좀 해 줘.

Haha, myeonjeobeseo geureon geol nuga mureobwa? Jinjja jilmun jom hae jwo.

Ha ha, who asks that in an interview? Give me a real question.
A 알았어, 알았어. 그럼 지금 회사는 왜 그만두고 싶어?

Arasseo, arasseo. Geureom jigeum hoesaneun wae geumandugo sipeo?

Okay, okay. Then why do you want to leave your company?
B 음, 지금 회사는 너무 멀어서 너랑 저녁을 같이 못 먹잖아.

Eum, jigeum hoesaneun neomu meoreoseo neorang jeonyeogeul gachi mot meokjana.

Well, my office is so far away that I never get to have dinner with you.
A 그건 좋은 대답인데? 근데 아빠, 목소리가 너무 작아.

Geugeon joeun daedabinde? Geunde appa, moksoriga neomu jaga.

That's actually a good answer. But Dad, your voice is too quiet.
B 그래? 그럼 다시. "안녕하십니까! 김정호입니다!"

Geurae? Geureom dasi. "Annyeonghasimnikka! Gimjeonghoimnida!"

Really? Then again. "Hello! My name is Kim Jeongho!"
A 오, 멋있다! 넥타이도 매 봐. 진짜 회사원 같아.

O, meositda! Nektaido mae bwa. Jinjja hoesawon gata.

Ooh, cool! Put your tie on too. You look like a real office worker.
B 좋아. 근데 너랑 연습했더니 진짜 덜 떨린다.

Joa. Geunde neorang yeonseupaetdeoni jinjja deol tteollinda.

All right. You know, now that I've practised with you, I'm actually less nervous.
A 거봐. 나도 발표 전에 아빠랑 연습했더니 하나도 안 떨렸잖아.

Geobwa. Nado balpyo jeone apparang yeonseupaetdeoni hanado an tteollyeotjana.

See? When I practised with you before my presentation, I wasn't nervous at all.
B 맞다. 그럼 아까 첫 번째 질문에 다시 대답해 볼게. "네! 라면은 제가 제일 잘 끓입니다!"

Matda. Geureom akka cheot beonjjae jilmune dasi daedapae bolge. "Ne! Ramyeoneun jega jeil jal kkeurimnida!"

That's right. Then let me answer your first question again. "Yes! Nobody makes ramyeon better than me!"
A 합격! 그럼 오늘 저녁은 아빠가 라면 끓여.

Hapgyeok! Geureom oneul jeonyeogeun appaga ramyeon kkeuryeo.

You're hired! Then you're making ramyeon for dinner tonight.
