Day 110: Table Tennis at the Senior Centre

At a senior centre, Jaemin (A), a young volunteer table-tennis coach, arrives for practice and finds Mrs. Oh (B), one of his regular players, already at the table.

Ma'am, you're the first one here again today. You practise like it's your daily bread.

You have to practise like you eat your meals to get better. At my age, this is the most fun I've got.
A 요즘 공 치시는 걸 보면 작년이랑 완전히 다르세요.

The way you hit the ball these days, you're a completely different player from last year.
B 그렇지? 그래서 말인데, 이번 구청 탁구 대회에 한번 나가 볼까 한다.

Right? Which reminds me, I'm thinking of entering the district table-tennis tournament this time.

But I hear everyone has a good serve. Mine is weak, so I'm worried.
A 그럼 오늘은 새 서브를 하나만 배워 보세요. 네트 앞에 짧게 떨어지는 서브요.

Then today, let's learn just one new serve. A short one that drops just over the net.
B 하나만? 좋다. 천천히 한번 보여 줘 봐라.

Just one? Good. Show me, slowly.
A 공을 이렇게 살짝 띄우시고, 칼로 자르듯이 라켓을 아래로 쓱 내리세요.

Toss the ball up lightly like this, and bring the paddle down, as if you're slicing with a knife.
B 칼질이야 내가 평생 했지. 이렇게? 어머, 공이 네트에 걸렸네.

Kaljiriya naega pyeongsaeng haetji. Ireoke? Eomeo, gongi neteue geollyeonne.

Knife work, I've done all my life. Like this? Oh dear, it caught the net.
A 거의 다 됐어요. 공을 조금만 더 높이 던져 보세요.

You're nearly there. Try tossing the ball just a little higher.
B 이번엔 됐다! 선생, 봤니? 넘어갔다!

Ibeonen dwaetda! Seonsaeng, bwanni? Neomeogatda!

Got it this time! Did you see that? It went over!
A 봤어요! 이 서브면 대회에서 상대가 깜짝 놀랄 거예요.

Bwasseoyo! I seobeumyeon daehoeeseo sangdaega kkamjjak nollal geoyeyo.

I saw! With this serve, your opponents at the tournament are in for a shock.
B 그럼 대회 날까지 매일 이것만 연습하자. 선생도 빠지지 말고 꼭 나와라.

Geureom daehoe nalkkaji maeil igeonman yeonseupaja. Seonsaengdo ppajiji malgo kkok nawara.
