Day 6: Can't Even Tune the Gayageum

   A 선생님, 매일 한 시간씩 연습은 했어요. 근데 첫 곡은커녕 아직 줄도 제대로 못 맞춰요.

   Seonsaengnim, maeil han siganssik yeonseubeun haesseoyo. Geunde cheot gogeunkeonyeong ajik juldo jedaero mot matchwoyo.

   I did practise an hour every day. But forget the first song, I still can't even tune the strings properly.

   B 아, 줄 맞추는 게 원래 제일 어려워요. 가야금은 줄이 열두 개나 되거든요.

   A, jul matchuneun ge wollae jeil eoryeowoyo. Gayageumeun juri yeoldu gaena doegeodeunyo.

   Ah, tuning is the hardest part to begin with. A gayageum has twelve strings, after all.

   A 다른 분들은 금방 맞추시는데 저만 이런 것 같아서 속상해요.

   B 다들 처음엔 똑같았어요. 가야금은 날씨가 습하거나 추우면 소리가 금방 바뀌어요.

   Dadeul cheoeumen ttokgatasseoyo. Gayageumeun nalssiga seupageona chuumyeon soriga geumbang bakkwieoyo.

   Everyone was the same at first. And a gayageum's sound changes quickly when the weather is humid or cold.

   A 아, 그래서 어제 맞춰 놓은 음이 오늘 또 달라졌군요. 손가락도 너무 아프고요.

   Oh, so that's why the tuning I did yesterday was off again today. And my fingers really hurt, too.

   Sore fingers are proof that you've been working hard. Once you get calluses, it hurts much less.

   Actually, I was thinking of learning guitar but chose the gayageum instead. Was it a mistake?

   B 그런 말 하지 말아요. 가야금은 소리도 아름답거니와 역사도 깊어요. 천천히 하면 돼요.

   Geureon mal haji marayo. Gayageumeun sorido areumdapgeoniwa yeoksado gipeoyo. Cheoncheonhi hamyeon dwaeyo.

   Don't say that. The gayageum not only sounds beautiful, it has a long history too. Just take it slowly.

    Sure. Now, pluck the strings one by one, starting from the lowest. And listen carefully.
