Day 234: Red Bean Porridge for the Solstice

On the winter solstice, Jihun (A), a young volunteer from the local welfare centre, brings red bean porridge to Youngsook (B), an older woman who lives alone.

B 아이고, 이 추운 날에 여기까지 왔어요? 들어와요.

Aigo, i chuun nare yeogikkaji wasseoyo? Deureowayo.

Oh my, you came all this way on such a cold day? Come in.
A 오늘 동지라서 팥죽을 가져왔어요. 따뜻할 때 드세요.

Oneul dongjiraseo patjugeul gajyeowasseoyo. Ttatteutal ttae deuseyo.

It's the winter solstice, so I've brought you red bean porridge. Have it while it's warm.
B 고마워요. 그런데 이걸 혼자 다 못 먹어요.

Gomawoyo. Geureonde igeol honja da mot meogeoyo.

Thank you. But I can't eat all this by myself.
A 여기 복지관 메모도 있어요. '남은 팥죽은 냉장고에 넣을 것.'

Yeogi bokjigwan memodo isseoyo. 'Nameun patjugeun naengjanggoe neoeul geot.'

There's a note from the centre, too. "Put any leftover porridge in the fridge."
B 그럼 내일 또 먹을 수 있겠네요.

Geureom naeil tto meogeul su itgenneyo.

Then I can have some more tomorrow.
A 그리고 '먹기 전에 한 번 끓일 것.'

Geurigo 'meokgi jeone han beon kkeuril geot.'

And "Bring it to the boil once before eating."
B 알았어요. 학생도 팥죽이나 떡 좀 먹고 가요.

Arasseoyo. Haksaengdo patjugina tteok jom meokgo gayo.

All right. You have some porridge or rice cake before you go, too.
A 괜찮아요, 할머니. 다른 댁에도 가야 돼요. 따뜻하게 지내세요!
