Day 137: A Tip Button at the Café

At a neighbourhood café, Yuna (A), a regular customer, asks Jihoon (B), the barista, about a new tipping option on the payment screen.

How to study this lesson 4 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

  2. B 아, 그거요. 지난주부터 새로 생긴 거예요. 선택 안 하셔도 돼요.

  3. A 한국 카페에서 팁 버튼은 처음 봐요. 갑자기 왜 생긴 거예요?

    That's the first time I've seen a tip button at a Korean café. Why suddenly?

    The owner heard other cafés are doing it these days, so he added it to give it a try.

    To be honest, it throws me a bit. I'm not sure I should have to think about tipping over one cup of coffee.

    A lot of people feel that way. But surprisingly, one or two customers a day do press it.

    So who gets the tips? Do they go to the staff?

  8. B 모아서 한 달에 한 번 직원들끼리 나눈대요. 사장님이 급여를 많이 못 올려 주시니까 이걸로라도 보태 주고 싶으셨나 봐요.

    They're pooled and split among the staff once a month. Since the owner can't raise our pay much, I guess he wanted to help out this way at least.

    I get the thought, but isn't that a problem for the shop to solve, not the customers?

    I agree with you there. If tipping becomes expected, it's the same as raising prices in the end.

    It's different in Korea. The custom here is not to charge separately for service.

    Exactly. Besides, coffee prices have gone up, so everyone's sensitive about prices, and being asked to tip on top of that is a real burden.

    Still, now and then a customer wants to tip because they liked the coffee. For them, this button is handy.

    Then why not put a small tip jar by the counter instead? So only people who want to give can.
