   Oh, thank you. I'm an architect, so whenever I see an old building, my hand starts drawing on its own. Are you a student?

   If that's your question, you can't leave out the Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe. The construction record they kept while building Hwaseong under King Jeongjo.

   Absolutely. The size of the stones, the workers' names, even their wages are all written down. And there are drawings of every building, so they worked as blueprints.

   B 그림까지 있었으니 복원할 때 그 기록을 거의 그대로 따를 수 있었겠네요.

   With drawings too, they must have been able to follow the record almost exactly when they restored it.

    A 맞아요. 그래서 유네스코도 복원된 화성을 세계유산으로 인정했어요. 기록에 관한 한 이만한 곳이 없죠.

    That's right. That's why UNESCO recognised the restored Hwaseong as World Heritage. When it comes to records, nowhere compares.

    B 그래도 저는 조금 의문이에요. 기록이 정확해도 새로 쌓은 돌은 새 돌이지 이백 년 넘은 돌이 아니잖아요.

    Geuraedo jeoneun jogeum uimunieyo. Girogi jeonghwakaedo saero ssaeun doreun sae doriji ibaek nyeon neomeun dori anijanayo.

    I still have my doubts, though. However accurate the record, newly laid stones are new stones, not stones over two hundred years old.

    A 날카로운 지적이에요. 하지만 문화재의 가치가 돌에만 있는 건 아니에요. 돌을 쌓은 방법과 기술도 문화재예요.

    That's a sharp point. But heritage value isn't only in the stones. The methods and skills used to lay them are heritage too.

    B 그럼 기록만 정확하면 돌이 전부 새것이어도 문화재예요?

    So as long as the record is accurate, it's heritage even if every stone is new?

    A 그렇게까지는 말 못 하죠. 저도 그 부분은 늘 고민이에요. 그래서 요즘은 원형을 살리려고 남아 있는 옛 돌을 최대한 다시 써요.

    Geureokekkajineun mal mot hajyo. Jeodo geu bubuneun neul gominieyo. Geuraeseo yojeumeun wonhyeongeul salliryeogo nama inneun yet doreul choedaehan dasi sseoyo.

    I wouldn't go that far. It's something I always wrestle with too. That's why these days, to preserve the original, we reuse as many of the surviving old stones as we can.
