   A 저기요, 혹시 요즘 애들이 쓰는 말을 정리한 사전 같은 거 있을까요? 신조어 사전이요.

   Excuse me, would you have something like a dictionary of the words kids use these days? A slang dictionary?

   A 중학생 딸이 있는데요, 걔가 하는 말을 절반은 못 알아들어요. 단어가 다 생소해서요. 어제는 저한테 '엄마 진짜 킹받네'라고 하더라고요.

   I have a daughter in middle school, and I can't understand half of what she says. The words are all new to me. Yesterday she said to me, 'Mom, you're making me king-mad.'

   B 아, '열받는다'를 더 세게 말하는 겁니다. 너무 걱정하지 마십시오. 비속어라기보다는 친구끼리 장난스럽게 쓰는 말입니다.

   A, 'yeolbanneunda'reul deo sege malhaneun geomnida. Neomu geokjeonghaji masipsio. Bisogeoragibodaneun chingukkiri jangnanseureopge sseuneun marimnida.

   Ah, it's a stronger way of saying she's really annoyed. Please don't worry too much. It's not so much a rude word as something friends say to each other for fun.

   That's a relief. Then please recommend a book that has all those words in it. The thickest one.

   B 솔직하게 말씀드리면, 이런 책은 인쇄되는 날 이미 옛말 사전이 됩니다. 여기 있는 단어 절반은 요즘 중학생들이 들으면 오히려 촌스럽다고 할 겁니다.

   Old words the day they're printed? Times really have changed. I've no hope of keeping up with my daughter. I feel like saying, 'Who could ever fathom a teenage daughter's heart?'

   B 하하, 손님 말씀이 꼭 시 같습니다. 저희 직원들끼리도 '유행어를 어찌 책 한 권에 다 담으리오' 하고 농담을 합니다.

   Haha, sonnim malsseumi kkok si gatseumnida. Jeohui jigwondeulkkirido 'yuhaengeoreul eojji chaek han gwone da dameurio' hago nongdameul hamnida.

   Ha ha, you sound just like a poet. We staff joke about it too: 'How could a single book ever hold all the slang?'

   A 저희 아버지도 제가 고등학생 때 똑같은 말씀을 하셨어요. '요즘 아이들 말은 나도 모르겠네' 하시면서요.

   Jeohui abeojido jega godeunghaksaeng ttae ttokgateun malsseumeul hasyeosseoyo. 'Yojeum aideul mareun nado moreugenne' hasimyeonseoyo.

   My father said exactly the same thing when I was in high school. 'I can't make head or tail of young people's talk these days,' he'd say.

    A '방가방가', '즐' 같은 거요. 지금 생각하면 제 말이 더 이상했네요. 아버지는 '그게 무슨 뜻인가' 하시면서 한참 쳐다보시더라고요.

    'Banggabangga', 'jeul' gateun geoyo. Jigeum saenggakamyeon je mari deo isanghaenneyo. Abeojineun 'geuge museun tteusinga' hasimyeonseo hancham chyeodabosideoragoyo.

    Things like 'bangga bangga' for 'hi' and 'jeul' for 'get lost.' Thinking about it now, mine were even weirder. My father would stare at me for ages, going, 'And what is that supposed to mean?'

    B 결국 세대마다 똑같은 일이 반복되는 셈입니다. 그래서 제가 추천해 드리고 싶은 건 사전이 아니라 이겁니다.

    So in the end, the same thing repeats itself with every generation. That's why what I'd like to recommend isn't a dictionary, but this.

    It would be nice if you wrote the first page yourself. Starting with the word you learned today, 'king-mad.' Writing the meaning slightly wrong on purpose is a good trick, too.

    It's short for 'on your own, smartly, just right, neatly and with flair.' Oh, and don't tell your daughter I taught you. We mustn't take away the editor's authority.
