Day 12: Radio Panel on Blind Dates

On an evening radio show, host Minsu (A) talks about blind dates with counsellor Hyejin (B), comedian Taeho (C) and office worker Seoyeon (D).

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

Tonight's topic is blind dates. For a first meeting, is coffee better, or a meal?
B 제 경험으로는 커피가 낫습니다. 첫인상은 한 시간이면 충분합니다.

Je gyeongheomeuroneun keopiga natseumnida. Cheodinsangeun han siganimyeon chungbunhamnida.

In my experience, coffee is better. An hour is plenty for a first impression.
C 저는 반대입니다. 소개팅을 열 번 했었는데, 커피만 마실 때는 대화가 금방 끝났습니다.

Jeoneun bandaeimnida. Sogaetingeul yeol beon haesseonneunde, keopiman masil ttaeneun daehwaga geumbang kkeunnatseumnida.

I disagree. I've been on ten blind dates, and when it was just coffee, the conversation died fast.
A 열 번이요? 그럼 식사할 때는 어땠습니까?

Yeol beoniyo? Geureom siksahal ttaeneun eottaetseumnikka?

Ten? So how did it go when you had a meal?
C 밥을 먹으면서 이야기하니까 훨씬 편했습니다. 상대방을 웃게 하는 것도 쉬웠고요.

Babeul meogeumyeonseo iyagihanikka hwolssin pyeonhaetseumnida. Sangdaebangeul utge haneun geotdo swiwotgoyo.

Talking over food was much more relaxed. It was easier to make the other person laugh, too.
D 저는 생각이 좀 다릅니다. 작년 소개팅 때 두 시간 동안 고기를 구웠었거든요.

Jeoneun saenggagi jom dareumnida. Jangnyeon sogaeting ttae du sigan dongan gogireul guwosseotgeodeunyo.

I see it a bit differently. On a blind date last year, I spent two hours grilling meat.
A 직접 구우셨습니까? 그래서 어떻게 됐습니까?

Jikjeop guusyeotseumnikka? Geuraeseo eotteoke dwaetseumnikka?

You grilled it yourself? So how did it turn out?
D 고기만 굽다가 대화를 거의 못 했습니다. 결국 연락이 끊겼습니다.

Gogiman gupdaga daehwareul geoui mot haetseumnida. Gyeolguk yeollagi kkeunkyeotseumnida.

I was so busy grilling that we hardly talked. In the end, we lost touch.
B 결국 중요한 건 메뉴가 아닙니다. 상대방이 편하게 이야기하게 하는 것입니다.

Gyeolguk jungyohan geon menyuga animnida. Sangdaebangi pyeonhage iyagihage haneun geosimnida.

In the end, what matters isn't the menu. It's getting the other person to talk comfortably.
A 좋은 말씀입니다. 여러분은 커피파입니까, 식사파입니까?

Joeun malsseumimnida. Yeoreobuneun keopipaimnikka, siksapaimnikka?
