Day 124: Friend Copies All My Homework

At the dinner table, Junwoo (C), a teenage boy, talks with his mother Eunhee (B) and his grandmother (A) about a friend who keeps asking for his homework.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

Mom, after dinner I need to take a photo of my maths homework. I have to send it to Minsu.
B 숙제 사진을? 민수가 그걸 왜?

Sukje sajineul? Minsuga geugeol wae?

A photo of your homework? What does Minsu want that for?
C 그냥... 베끼려고. 이번 달에만 벌써 다섯 번째야.

Geunyang... bekkiryeogo. Ibeon dareman beolsseo daseot beonjjaeya.

Well... to copy it. That's the fifth time this month already.
A 숙제를 베껴? 그걸 왜 보내 주니?

Sukjereul bekkyeo? Geugeol wae bonae juni?

He copies your homework? Why do you send it to him?
C 부탁하는데 거절하기가 좀 그래요. 친구잖아요.

Butakaneunde geojeolhagiga jom geuraeyo. Chingujanayo.

When he asks, it's awkward to say no. He's my friend.
B 그래도 거절해야 돼. 그렇게 해 주면 민수한테도 도움이 안 돼.

You still have to say no. Letting him copy doesn't help Minsu either.
A 계속 베끼면 결국 그 친구가 손해를 본다. 시험 볼 때는 네가 옆에 없잖아.

If he keeps copying, he's the one who loses out in the end. You won't be sitting next to him in exams.
C 그럼 어떻게 거절해요? 할머니는 그럴 때 어떻게 하셨어요?

So how do I say no? What did you do in times like that, Grandma?
A 사진은 보내지 말고, 모르는 문제는 같이 풀어. 진짜 친구면 그걸 더 고마워해.

Sajineun bonaeji malgo, moreuneun munjeneun gachi pureo. Jinjja chingumyeon geugeol deo gomawohae.

Don't send the photo. Work through the problems he doesn't get together. A real friend will appreciate that more.
