Day 182: How Much Goes in the Envelope?

At the office coffee machine, Jungwoo (A) and Daeun (B), coworkers of the same rank, talk about a colleague's wedding this weekend.

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

But how much do you put in the envelope? Deciding on the amount is what I find hardest.

Jeoneun botong oman won naeneun pyeonieyo. Chinhan saramhanteneun simman won naegoyo.

I usually give 50,000 won. For people I'm close to, 100,000.
A 식사까지 하면 오만 원은 좀 적지 않아요? 밥값이 비싸다고 들었어요.

Siksakkaji hamyeon oman woneun jom jeokji anayo? Bapgapsi bissadago deureosseoyo.

If you stay for the meal too, isn't 50,000 a bit little? I've heard the meals are expensive.
B 맞아요. 그래서 저도 식사를 하고 오면 조금 더 넣는 편이에요.

70,000 is a bit of an awkward amount. People on the same team usually give 100,000.
A 아, 그래요? 그럼 봉투에 이름도 써요?

A, geuraeyo? Geureom bongtue ireumdo sseoyo?

Oh, really? And do I write my name on the envelope?
B 네, 뒤에 이름을 쓰면 돼요. 현금은 새 돈으로 준비하면 더 좋고요.

Yes, just write it on the back. And it's even better if the cash is in crisp new notes.
