Day 193: A Friend Asks to Borrow Money

Over coffee at work, Minsu (A), a junior employee, asks his manager, Mr. Yoon (B), for advice about a friend.

Minsu, your coffee's gone cold. You must have something on your mind these days.
A 티가 나요? 사실 고등학교 친구가 돈을 좀 빌려 달라고 해서요.

Is it that obvious? Actually, a friend from high school asked to borrow some money.

About five million won. He said he's a few months behind on rent.
B 큰돈이네요. 그 친구 사정이 많이 급한가 봐요.

That's a lot of money. Things must be pretty desperate for him.
A 네. 근데 저도 결혼 준비 때문에 여유가 없거든요. 거절하면 친구를 잃을까 봐 걱정이에요.

Yeah. But I'm short on money too, with the wedding coming up. I'm worried I'll lose him as a friend if I say no.
B 저도 비슷한 일이 있었어요. 대학 친구한테 천만 원을 빌려준 적이 있거든요.

Something similar happened to me. I once lent ten million won to a friend from university.

Only half. But losing the friend hurt more than the money. We lost touch after that.
A 그럼 거절하는 게 맞을까요?

So is saying no the right thing to do?
B 제 생각에는, 못 받아도 괜찮은 만큼만 빌려주는 게 좋아요. 부탁을 다 거절할 필요는 없어요.

If you ask me, only lend as much as you'd be fine never getting back. You don't have to turn him down completely.

Then I'll lend him one million, and be honest with him about the rest.
