Day 50: A Text From 'Your Son'

In the hallway of their apartment building, Mr. Park (A), an elderly man, stops his neighbour, Jiho's mother (B), to show her his phone.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.
Download the Anki deck below and review it every day. It has every line of today's dialogue. Review earlier decks too when Anki asks you to.
Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Korean, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Jiho's mom, could you take a look at this? There's something strange about a text from my son.
B 이거요? '아빠, 폰이 고장 나서 친구 폰으로 보내. 오십만 원만 급하게 보내 줘.'

Igeoyo? 'Appa, poni gojang naseo chingu poneuro bonae. Osimman wonman geupage bonae jwo.'

This one? 'Dad, my phone's broken, so I'm texting from a friend's. Send me 500,000 won, it's urgent.'
A 무슨 일이 생긴 것 같아요. 은행에 가려고요.

Museun iri saenggin geot gatayo. Eunhaenge garyeogoyo.

Something must have happened. I'm going to the bank.
B 잠깐만요, 어르신. 이 전화번호는 아드님이 쓰시던 번호가 아니에요.

Jamkkanmanyo, eoreusin. I jeonhwabeonhoneun adeunimi sseusideon beonhoga anieyo.

Wait a moment, sir. This isn't the number your son has been using.
A 휴대폰이 고장 나서 친구 걸 빌린 거 아닐까요?

Hyudaeponi gojang naseo chingu geol billin geo anilkkayo?

Couldn't he have borrowed a friend's because his phone broke?
B 요즘 이런 문자가 많아요. 원래 쓰시던 번호로 전화해 보세요.

Yojeum ireon munjaga manayo. Wollae sseusideon beonhoro jeonhwahae boseyo.

There are lots of texts like this these days. Try calling his usual number.
A 휴대폰이 고장 났는데 전화를 받을 수 있을까요?

If his phone's broken, will he even be able to answer?
B 일단 걸어 보세요. 안 받으면 그때 다시 생각해요.

Oh my, my son picked up straight away! His phone's fine, and he didn't send any text.

The bank app warns about it too: 'A text may look like it's from your family, but it is often a scam.'
