Day 52: Have You Eaten, Professor Asks

At lunchtime in a university lab, Professor Yoon (B) stops by the desk of Daniel (A), an international graduate student in her department.

How to study this lesson 4 steps

Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Still learning Hangul? Tick Romanization to see how each line sounds, but read the Korean first.

Daniel, it's lunchtime. Have you eaten?
A 아, 교수님. 네, 지금 먹고 있어요. 삼각김밥이요.

A, gyosunim. Ne, jigeum meokgo isseoyo. Samgakgimbabiyo.

Oh, Professor. Yes, I'm eating right now. A triangle kimbap.
B 그게 무슨 식사예요. 어제도 삼각김밥 먹고 있던데요.

Geuge museun siksayeyo. Eojedo Samgakgimbap meokgo itdeondeyo.

That's not a meal. You were eating a triangle kimbap yesterday too.
A 요즘 논문 쓰느라고 밥을 제대로 못 먹었어요.

I've been so busy writing my thesis that I haven't been eating properly lately.
B 그러다가 몸 상해요. 오늘은 같이 학교 앞 식당에 가요. 제가 살게요.

Keep that up and you'll make yourself ill. Let's go to a restaurant by the campus today. My treat.
A 감사합니다. 그런데 교수님, 한국 사람들은 왜 인사할 때 '밥 먹었어요?' 하고 물어봐요?

Gamsahamnida. Geureonde gyosunim, Hanguk saramdeureun wae insahal ttae 'bap meogeosseoyo?' Hago mureobwayo?

Thank you. But Professor, why do Koreans ask 'Have you eaten?' when they say hello?
B 옛날에는 밥을 못 먹는 사람이 많았거든요. 그래서 그게 '잘 지내요?' 같은 인사가 됐어요.

Yennareneun babeul mot meongneun sarami manatgeodeunyo. Geuraeseo geuge 'jal jinaeyo?' Gateun insaga dwaesseoyo.

In the old days, lots of people didn't have enough to eat. So it became a greeting, like 'How are you?'
A 아, 그래서 대답을 안 듣고 그냥 지나가는 사람도 많았군요.

Oh, so that's why lots of people walked right past me without waiting for an answer.
B 맞아요. 근데 오늘은 인사가 아니라 진짜 질문이었어요. 자, 가방 챙겨요.

Exactly. But today it wasn't a greeting, it was a real question. Come on, grab your bag.
A 네! 그런데 교수님은 식사하셨어요?

Ne! Geureonde gyosunimeun siksahasyeosseoyo?

Okay! And have you eaten, Professor?
B 하하, 아직이요. 그러니까 빨리 가요.

Haha, ajigiyo. Geureonikka ppalli gayo.
